Fury 235 Carowinds to reach new heights in 2015

After treating guests of Kings Dominion to Intimidator 305 back in 2010, Cedar Fair is to spoil visitors to Carowinds in North Carolina next season with the addition of another big coaster from Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M). Fury 325 – standing 325ft (99m) high– will become the world's tallest and fastest mega coaster, and the tallest rollercoaster yet built by B&M. Visible from uptown Charlotte on the North Carolina-South Carolina

border, the ride will renew the park’s skyline and serve as a symbol of changes to come as part of a planned $50 million dollar multiyear

investment. Fury 325 will be the centrepiece of a new 8.2 acre main entrance plaza that includes a new ticketing processing area and expanded guest service facilities. As from this coming spring, passengers will be able to board one of the

coaster’s three 32-seater open trains and begin their ascent to the top of the 300ft+ lift hill. This immense peak is followed by an exhilarating 81° first drop. Like “an angry hornet chasing its target,” Fury 325 will race through a series of hills, curves and quick transitions while reaching speeds of up to 95mph (153 km/h). Riders will speed along just over 2km (6,602ft) of track during the nearly three-and-a-half minute ride.

Fun House is the star of Hersheypark’s new coaster

Set to become the Pennsylvania park’s 13th rollercoaster, Laff Trakk (pictured) is coming to Hersheypark in 2015. Described as a “21st century Fun House” the glow-in- the dark indoor coaster will open in May, delivering a different sensory experience with each trip. The elaborately-themed $14 million project will feature larger than life depictions of Laffing Sal, a hall of mirrors, house of cards and more, which riders will see as they speed and twist their way through the ride building. Hersheypark is working with New York-based designer Raven Sun Creative to realise the experience, which will feature a spinning coaster ride system by Maurer Söhne. “Fun houses are an American amusement park

treasure and an important part of the historical fabric at Hersheypark,” notes

general manager Kevin Stumpf. “We are thrilled to bring back some of the timeless elements from these classic attractions and put a new spin on them.” “Our team took inspiration from researching iconic Hersheypark fun houses,” adds Raven Sun’s Louis Alfieri. “We looked at archival images of Whoops, Laugh Land and Laffing Sal with the goal of recreating the nostalgic fun houses of yesteryear with the latest in technology.” Laff Trakk will be located inside a 130ft (39.5m) long by 75ft (23m) high red, white and blue building between the Whip and Midway Tent on Hersheypark’s Midway America. The coaster at the heart of the attraction will feature 1,391ft (424m) of track and reach speed of up to 40 miles (65km) per hour. Ride elements will include an Immelman turn, multiple high-banked curves and Camelback air time hills – not that they will be instantly recognisable to riders in the dark. Formerly with Universal Creative, Alfieri previously collaborated with Maurer on Rip, Ride, Rock-It at Universal Studios Florida.
