Cold Chain Logistics Case Study

facility, at Hams Hall in the Midlands to its portfolio to continue improving its service offering to retailers.

Warm environment Y

A pair of Aisle-Master articulated fork lift trucks at Yearsley Logistics’ Hams Hall cold storage facility enable their operators to work in a warm cabin, whilst at the same time enabling greater pallet density.

earsley Logistics is the largest frozen food logistics service provider in the UK, operating from 13 strategic locations around the country. It recently added the 200,000 sq ft automated cold storage

In order to ensure maximum pallet density in what is a much more cost-intensive operation than ambient warehousing, Yearsley Logistics chose two cold store models from articulated forklift manufacturer Aisle-Master to work in the Hams Hall site. They have replaced a mix of counterbalance and reach trucks, and their narrow aisle capability has enabled the pallet count to be increased from 3,800 to 4,500. “The ability of the trucks to work in aisle-widths of just 2,000mm and to a top bay height of 6,650mm has allowed us to exploit every inch of our cold storage space,” says Nigel Wilson, general manager at Hams Hall.

The Aisle-Master cold store model, which won the 2013 UK

FLTA Award for Innovation, was developed in collaboration with major names in the sector and, as such, is engineered to cope easily with the exacting demands the cold environment makes on machines and operators alike. Bar code scanners can be used from within the fully-enclosed heated cab against a specifi cally allocated area of the glass screen, enabling operators to carry out all necessary tasks without leaving the comfort of the warm workstation.

Extremely cold environments can affect battery performance, but the powerful 930A batteries fi tted into the Aisle-Masters are more than up to the job, enabling the trucks to work 24/7 to accord with Yearsley Logistics’ delivery schedules. With two batteries allocated to each truck and quick and easy changeover carried out with a pallet truck, minimal operational interruption is ensured. n

Waitrose chills out W

aitrose placed thermal insulation systems manufacturer and supplier SMI’s Cold-Korner units in two of its busy London stores, allowing SMI to test the product in real-life situations.

After a year of trials, SMI says it is hoping to roll out the product to other retailers. “We are grateful to Waitrose for their co-operation,” said SMI managing director Brian Seymour. “We have supplied Waitrose for more than 35 years with a variety of our products, and appreciate their unbiased opinion and professional business-like observations.

“So they were a natural choice for Cold-Korner. We undertake SMI has supplied Waitrose for 35 years 54 September 2014 September 2014

Supermarket chain Waitrose has worked with Seymour Manufacturing International (SMI) to develop and refi ne a new innovation which provides food stores with an instant chilled space, wherever and whenever it is needed.

material Tempro, is an easy-to-install fl exible enclosure which can turn an area of a store room into an instant chill space, only when needed.

It can reach 2°C in under 15 minutes from a 13A evaporator with fast draw-down, and takes on average just four hours to install. SMI says its Track-Rack shelving inside the chill zone ensures maximum storage and protection of produce, and the system requires little service or maintenance. Jemma Williams, convenience operations manager at Waitrose, said: “We approached SMI to support us developing an instant chilled space when we need it. The Cold-Korner is a fl exible refrigeration solution which has helped us to maximise space in our smaller formats. We will look to utilise the solution in future stores and formats where suitable.” n
