Cold Chain Logistics New Aldi Facility
Faster, cheaper, bett er
Single-envelope construction
environment composite panel systems, together with single-envelope construction techniques, can signifi cantly reduce both build and running costs for warehouse and distribution centres. ISD Solutions, a leading proponent of this approach and a specialist in composite panel construction, is already seeing up-front savings in build costs of up to 20% when compared to a traditional cold storage facility, and a reported 30% increase in long-term energy effi ciency when compared to traditionally-clad builds. Construction is faster and, with fewer raw materials, signifi cantly less secondary steelwork for example, costs are reduced. Meanwhile the thermal qualities of metal-faced composite panels keep temperatures constant and completely airtight, regulating heat loss and gains to reduce a building’s energy consumption.
W LESS ENERGY
The composite panels used are a low-carbon building material with a reduced ‘global warming potential’ (GWP). Since fewer materials are used and less energy is required in operation, single-envelope construction better satisfi es WRAP and BREEAM targets.

conventional cold store warehouse design, leading to faster build times, reduced construction expenditure and importantly – improved lifetime energy costs. Adrian Smith, technical director at ISD Solutions explains how Aldi is benefi ting.
This approach also helps customers with carbon debt reduction and improved carbon reporting, now a boardroom issue. Previously, traditional cold storage warehouses involved the construction of two buildings - one inside the other - often requiring environmental control and fi re prevention sprinkler systems in the roof void; costly in terms of raw materials, time consuming to build and not particularly sustainable or thermally effi cient. Aldi’s new 52,000 sq m DC at Goldthorpe, near Barnsley - due to open in 2015, including warehouse, chilled food storage areas and offi ce space - is an example of single-envelope construction. Expected to operate 24/7, 365 days a year, the specifi cation for the project provides a high performance, environmentally-friendly solution, with extremely low running costs. A single-envelope design was chosen here, as it produces a structure that is faster and more cost-effective to build, with signifi cantly improved thermal properties and consequently minimal issues from frost and moisture in the refrigerated storage areas. ISD Solutions works with Aldi across a number of in-store frozen and chilled food storage solutions, and this is its fi rst stand- alone warehouse for the store group. The range of composite panel technology

incorporated in this project such as 20,000 sq m of Kingspan controlled environment insulated wall and roof panels, makes this a truly state-of-the-art warehouse structure. ISD has also been able to incorporate the warehouse energy centre, normally requiring a separate structure, into the main building, resulting in a simpler, more cost-effective solution.
With demand growing for ever more cost-effective warehouse and frozen food storage facilities, in the UK and abroad, ISD has never been busier. But design and installation are crucial areas to get right if construction and long-term reductions in running costs can be achieved. It is the combination of design, manufacturing and installation expertise, working together, that enables us to achieve airtight and resilient structures. The same is true where steel-faced composite panels are used in fi re wall applications. For Aldi this approach is used to provide fi re separation between ambient and chilled parts of the warehouse. Excellent fi re resistance, from 60 to 240 minutes if needed, can be achieved but correct design and installation is even more important here if the required fi re resistance is to be achieved. n
