If you ask young people, in their final school year, what would they like to be when they grow-up, they’re as likely to say “Logistics Director” as they are to say “Warehouse Manager.”
“It is not seen by the younger generation as an exciting industry to be part of. It remains a necessity that ticks along keeping life going as opposed to something dynamic and innovative which it is in reality and should be considered as such,” – says Peter Harvey, chief executive, FLTA. I asked several industry colleagues the question: “Why don’t young people enter our industry?” They had no hesitation in responding. “The industry is over-reliant on its ‘comfort zone’ demographic – the middle aged white man – and has failed to adapt to the changing population in the UK,” – explains Ruth Waring, managing director, Labyrinth Logistics Consulting.
Jonathan Gibson, head of logistics at Crimson & Co, said as an industry, “logistics is perceived to be less exciting than other sectors… A barrier facing the industry is the reliance on outsourced services meaning the pool of skills available in the logistics sector is shrinking.”

Peter Jones, managing director of Logistics Learning Alliance, tells us: “The myth of an industry of men that does not know its own value to the economy and the diversity of employment within it, is not easily dispelled.” But dispel we must. And the opportunity to do so is increasing. Organisations are going into schools and re-iterating what a supply chain and logistics career could look like – and how exciting our industry is. Employers are also making moves for change, especially in the Liverpool City Region, where funding has been made available to aid these schemes.
