BMC Access and Conservation Trust urges BMC members to “dig deep” and support Roaches footpath appeal

Packed with breath-taking views and challenging climbs for all abilities, yet easily accessible from many towns and cities, it is little wonder that the Roaches in Staffordshire’s Peak District receive an estimated 100,000 visits every year.

Sadly, this intense visitor pressure all year round coupled with thin soils is having a detrimental effect on the fragile environment. Huge scars, sometimes fi ve metres across and over a metre deep have been cut into the side of the hills by walkers’ boots and water run-off. Not only are these scars ugly, they are also damaging habitat, making access treacherous and affecting many of the climbs that mean so much to BMC members.

“As custodians of the Roaches, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust urgently needs your support to fund the restoration of these paths using traditional upland footpath techniques. Over the next 3 years we need to raise £175,000 to tackle the worst affected areas. All money raised through this appeal will go directly towards restoring footpaths on the Roaches.”

“Climbers and walkers at the Roaches have been campaigning for many years for a programme of repair and restoration of the footpaths on the estate. The Access and Conservation Trust of the British Mountaineering Council is therefore pleased to be able to support this Staff ordshire Wildlife Trust appeal as the proposed work meets all our concerns. We have already agreed to donate £5,000 from the Access Fund and urge BMC members to dig deep and back this appeal.”
