Summer of Shauna T

From funding despair to world domination?

his spring, British climbers pulled together to send a message of support to the GB Bouldering Team. This summer, team

member Shauna Coxsey (21) is repaying their faith: if her results continue, Shauna is set to become our fi rst-ever Bouldering World Cup Champion.

When their main sponsor

went bankrupt, the team desperately put out a crowd- funding appeal to help them compete in the eight-round 2014 IFSC Bouldering World Cup. In less than a day, nearly 300 people had solved their problem. Now, all they had to do was travel to Chongqing (China), Baku (Azerbaijan) Grindelwald, Innsbruck, Toronto, Vail, Haiyang, (China) and Laval (France), and take on the best in the world. From the start, all eyes

were on Shauna. She opened her account with silver in Chongqing, followed by a disappointing dab on the mat costing her fi rst place in Baku. Then Grindelwald saw gold, swiftly followed by another gold in Innsbruck, silver in

Toronto and a fi fth place in Vail. With the end of the season in sight will Shauna keep the fi re going and fend off the fi erce competition? The series culminates in Laval, France on 27-28 June. Shauna will also be competing in the IFSC World Championships, a standalone event in Munich on 21-23 August. After winning in Innsbruck,

Shauna commented: “Standing on top of the podium is indescribable; I still can’t believe that I won!” Rob Adie, BMC

competitions offi cer added: “This is a great result for the GB Climbing Team as whole, especially with all the funding challenges they had at the beginning of the season.”

The average climbing grade of the BMC Executive Committee has just shot up, with Mina Leslie-Wujastyk and Rupert Davies appointed as the new BMC vice presidents. Mina, one of Britain’s top female climbers, said: “I hope I can help the BMC by assisting in connecting with younger members and with women in our sport”. Steely-fi ngered barrister and boulderer Rupert Davies also commented: “I’m already involved with the BMC Land Management Group,” explained Rupert, “so I’m excited about my forthcoming role”. Both will take part in the work of the BMC Executive Committee, which is the board of the BMC.

fi sherman, but the recent announcement by John Griffi ths AM, Minister for Culture and Sport, puts an end to the speculation. The Minister said, however, that they do not plan to pursue primary legislation in this Assembly Term, which means the earliest progression would be mid-September. Elfyn Jones, BMC access offi cer for Wales said:

“This is a positive step forward and comes as a relief to the BMC. We’ve been urging the Welsh Government to extend and simplify access legislation through our Open Wales Campaign. New fi gures show that the outdoor activities sector is worth almost half a billion pounds to the Welsh economy. We’ll be working with other recreational bodies in Wales to encourage government to move forward on this as quickly as possible to maximise economic, health and wellbeing benefi ts which greater access to the Welsh countryside would bring.”

IFSC AGAINST CANCER

limbers Against Cancer (CAC) has been named its offi cial charity of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC).
