WHAT’S THE BMC STANCE ON BOLTING AND DRY TOOLING?

Stay safe this summer P

lanning a mountain holiday? Don’t forget to pack some BMC travel insurance. We’re sure you’ll have a

great trip but in case things do go wrong, fi nd out the emergency services number in your destination country, and let someone back home know your plans. If you’ve taken out BMC insurance, put the 24-hour helpline number into your phone. And if you’re travelling within the European Economic Area or Switzerland, take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) – this generally gives you the same rights as a resident in that country.

W

hether you’re a dry- tooling enthusiast or staunch defender of

climbing tradition, you may be interested in the latest position statements from the BMC. This follows discussions at national and local level and refl ects developments of the last 20 years. The position statements

provide guidance that respect traditions while also protecting the crag and mountain environment, as well as outlining the consultation process for agreeing new bolting and dry tooling activity. The drilled equipment statement provides a framework for agreeing where bolts are acceptable, and where they are not, in terms of climbing ethics.
