Less than 2 percent of veterinarians practice exclusively on food animals, while more than 67 percent of veterinarians practice exclusively on companion animals. TSCRF is working to help veterinary students choose a different career path.

need to be excellent veterinary medical providers.” The shortage of large-animal vets – those people

who are trained to work with food animals – also im- pacts the on-going efforts to improve the national food safety system. This scholarship assists students who are committed to that important fi eld of work as well. Amanda Kowalski, another recent scholarship re-

cipient, says, “TSCRF is a wonderful organization that provides support, initiative and fraternity to students with food-animal interests. Deciding how to track your courses (large, small or alternative) in vet school is a diffi cult decision faced by many vet students. This scholarship provides an incentive to production-oriented students to pursue their dreams. I know this scholar- ship was integral in helping to support my dream to be a food-animal vet.” Jessica Thomas, who also received the scholarship,

says, “Large-animal veterinarians choose this route because they are passionate about the medicine, the patients and the type of clients who bring them in. This program is helping to spark that passion.” This scholarship is possible because of the support of

the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and fundraising trail rides organized and supported by TSCRA members and by private donations. Because large-animal veterinarians are critical to

the continuing success of the beef industry, TSCRF is dedicated to supporting these outstanding young profes- sionals as they begin their careers. It is a win-win.
