following a call to assist in the installation, and subsequent restraining, of seven large diameter high voltage (HV) cables for an offshore electrical substation that forms part of the multi- million pound HelWin 2 project. “The requirement was to feed seven


117mm diameter cables along a specified route within a fabricated structure, which featured a significant number of twists and turns,” said Ellis’ managing director, Richard Shaw. “The problem though was that there was


no existing product that would enable the cables to be installed in an efficient, safe and cost effective manner.” The Ellis team, which had previously


developed a roller system for installation of HV cables in power


tunnels, took stock of the situation and set to work developing a solution that would secure the Siemens specification, and see them become the first company in the world to offer a two-in-one cable guide and clamp.


RAPID PROGRESS “Within six weeks of the initial meeting, Siemens had approved our new product design, two weeks later five working prototypes successfully passed an installation trial in Germany and less than a month after that we’d received the order and had the tooling ready for mass production,” added Shaw. our ability to innovate, but to be asked to do so in a live project situation was certainly a real test of our mettle,” continued Shaw. “To come through such a test with Siemens, problem solved, the specification secured and an entirely new product range on the verge of being launched is the kind of result that even I, at my most optimistic, wouldn’t have predicted when we sat in that first meeting looking at the requirements of the project.” HelWin 2 is a 690MW offshore HVDC


platform that provides low loss transmission between the North Sea offshore wind farm, Amrumbank West, and Germany’s onshore grid. It is due to be operational in 2015.

ADDRESSING A GREATER SAFETY NEED


Cable management specialist, HellermannTyton, has addressed the need for greater control and safety within the food and pharmaceutical industry by expanding its extensive range to include metal detectable cable tie mounts. Recognising that many metal content products on the market can still


go undetected, the new cable tie mounts provide a safe and secure surface to hold a cable tie in place. Along with its range of detectable cable ties and cable protection, the new addition provides a more complete portfolio for the industry. The development of this new product is the result of independent tests


carried out last year by HellermannTyton on the detectability of their own products and those from other manufacturers in the market. The company discovered that leading branded products, including its own, were easily detectable while cheaper imported cable ties fell significantly beneath the guidelines, with some being completely undetectable. As all types of plastic cable management solutions are used in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing, HellermannTyton recognised that every aspect of cable management within such environments needed to contain a high content of metal to be detectable and the mounts were designed to address this need. Blue in colour for easy visual detection, the mounts are screw fixing


bases that can be secured to any surface in order to hold a cable tie in place. This screw fixing element means that the product does not require any self adhesive, removing the risk of the adhesive becoming detached


from the base and entering the manufacturing process undetected. The mounts also boast a high metal pigment, meaning that even small ‘cut-off’ pieces are detectable and they can be used as part of the HACCP process. The metal detectable range from HellermannTyton is specifically


designed for use in the food and pharmaceutical manufacturing and processing industry. The range provides components that can be identified by magnetic detection, greatly reducing the risk of contamination and providing easy visual detection with the blue colour of the range. The new mounts also offer a simple installation with a screw or bolt and feature a four-way entry for a cable tie, ensuring a quicker and flexible installation.
