A lot to learn

__

Claire Matthewman explores the accessibility of post-graduate education.

One of the things I love about the beauty industry is that it is constantly evolving; from exciting product launches through to discovering the latest creative techniques, there’s always something new to learn, so I’m astounded when I hear that some beauty businesses don’t actively encourage, or ‘have the time’ for post-graduate training.

OK, I must admit I’m something of a geek when it comes to learning new things – I just can’t get enough of it; from embarking upon marketing courses through to teaching myself basic web design, but the point that I’m trying to make is that nobody has handed these opportunities to me on a plate – if I show an interest in a particular area I make it my mission to find out more – to see if it’s something I might be able to get funding for and if not work out ways to pay for it myself.

Obviously, this was all well and good when I still had enough of a

disposable income to spend on these courses, but even now when I’m a part-time working mum (and time and money is limited), I find myself looking for opportunities to expand my skill- base.

You see, for me, I’m probably at my happiest when I’m learning something new. Even from a young age I was very career-minded, I knew what I wanted to do and I had a very clear idea of how I was going to do it. Granted my education and career path didn’t always go as planned, but I picked myself up, dusted myself off and came up with an alternative strategy for getting where I wanted to be.

It’s not about being fickle, or being self-indulgent, it’s about investing in, and believing in myself and there’s so many things I’d love to do, why should I just stop learning because I’ve achieved my initial goal?

The same goes for you; whether you’re a nail technician, waxing specialist, beauty therapist, tanning technician or beauty business owner, there are literally hundreds of post- graduate training courses out there, from advanced waxing through to building your business using Social Media platforms, in fact I’m sure that

whatever your heart desires you could probably find a course to suit. So what exactly is it that’s stopping you?

The fear factor

For some people, the very idea of post-graduate education might make them anxious; I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s heard (or given) excuses such as ‘It’s been so long since I’ve been in a classroom, I wouldn’t know what to do’ or ‘I’ll never be able to learn how to do that!’, but how do you know you can’t do it unless you’re willing to give it a try!

“Post-graduate education is essential to keep up-to-date with new technologies and systems, no matter how long ago you graduated,” explains Audrey Heffernan, OPI Trainer for Hennessy Hair & Beauty Supplies.

“This [particular type of] training is important as it keeps therapists up to speed with the latest trends. Trends are always changing in this industry so there is always something to learn,” adds Audrey.

Lydia Safarti, CEO and Founder of Repêchage, agrees: “Staying up-to- date in terms of skill, knowledge, and
