Is setting-up a home-based salon a good idea?
”

“There are specific regulations to watch out for…”
“As someone who used to run a home-based salon, I amwholly in support of the idea, but it will not suit everyone and there are specific regulations to watch out for.
“If you are a self-motivator, are happy or prefer to work alone and have the space then it can be a very goodmove as your overheads will be greatly reduced and you can set your own working hours as you won’t have walk-in’s. This can suit both the therapist and the client very well asmany clients will work the same hours as a high street salon. The down-sides are that youmay feel as if you are never really away fromwork and you have to bemore creative with marketing as you won’t have a shop front to advertise to passers-by.
“If you are thinking of working fromhome you will need to check regulations with your local council. Theremay need to be a change of usage applied for and if there is not a separate entrance and defined work space then commercial ratesmay be applied to your whole house. You will also need a fire safety certificate and will have to check with your home insurance policy to see if this is affected too.”

“There is nomagic to starting a home-based business…”
“You don’t need special talents, you don’t even need loads ofmoney. What you do need is perseverance, motivation, integrity, good health and the ability to work hard. Being self-employed allows you to capitalise on your ability and knowledge, develop your business skills and achieve the quality of life you want. Being based at home gives you enormous flexibility in your working schedule.
“There are somany positive sides to running your own home-based salon, such as: you can organise your own working hours, you can do the services you enjoy and want to specialise in, you will learn a lot as you will deal with lots of different clients, your running costs and overheads will be kept to aminimum and you get a great sense of achievement.
“Yet there are points to consider when opening a home-based salon:Why are you starting? What are your business skills? What funding do you have?Who is your competition? Will running a salon disturb your family life? Do you have the space in your home to allocate to a salon? Can you create a salon environment in your home? Have you got the experience to ‘go it alone’? Have you got what it takes to be self-employed? And,most importantly, can you get the clients?
“Running a home-based salon gives you the opportunity to test out being self- employed without getting tied into expensive leases and properties. It is the safest starting point on your way to becoming a salon owner, nothing ventured, nothing gained!”

“Setting up a home-based business can work…”
“In 1973, I set upmy own home-based skin care business alone. It can work as a stepping stone to help build your business, but it can only work if you have the discipline to keep it professional.
“For example, keep your children away fromyour working space, and invest in a baby sitter if need be.Work around your clients’ schedule, and offer themhours that they prefer.
“Lastly, always have a professional presentation.Wear a lab coat, be properly groomed fromhead to toe, and never look like you've just rolled out of bed! Setting up a home- based business can work, but it needs to be done right – and don't forget to pay your taxes!"
LindsayO’Byrne
SalesManager at Sunaura Distribution “You’re your own boss…”
“Make sure that if you’re opening a home salon to keep it separate fromyour home – whether it’s a converted garage with a separate entrance or a completely separate building on your premises. If you have your salon in your own home, say in a roomupstairs, there are a few downsides – you’ll have to be sure to keep your entire house spotless on the off chance a client arrives, you could have clients calling at your house at all hours, etc.
“The benefits to opening your own home salon is that you’re your own boss, the running costs are less expensive (renting a premises, electricity, etc.) whichmeans you can afford to investmoremoney into the ambience and décor of your room. Because you’re savingmoney on running costs, you havemore of an opportunity to develop amore luxurious and distinct atmosphere in your treatment room.
“The salon’s reputation is only as good as the worst employee, so because you are in your own home-based salon, your reputation is based solely on your own skills and expertise.
“Because you’re your own boss, you can choose product ranges that you feel will reflect the excellence of your business.
“You are in the position to choose a unique selling point for your business, something that’s not readily available in the other salons in your area, to set yourself apart.”
