Just because you and your team wear a uniform to work doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun with the designs and

colourways. Think about your salon and choose a uniform that creates the impression you are trying to portray. Is your salon or nail bar fresh and funky, or calm and serene? Choose a style that complements this. You can also add accessories to personalise your uniform further; many suppliers offer coordinating belts and cummerbunds, or a pop of colour with contrast piping, diamantés, embellishments and stylish necklines.

Alternatively, you could base your choices around one staple colour but allow your team to choose the individual styles that they would feel most comfortable wearing – dresses, either on their own or paired with leggings, or tunics with their choice of fitted, flared or Capri style trousers for example.

Specialist design

So if a salon uniform is a necessity for your staff, what should you look for in garments designed for wear in the salon? There are a number of specialist salon wear designers and manufacturers supplying the beauty, nail and Spa sectors which means they really understand what a garment has to withstand.

“In the uniform industry everything revolves around longevity and durability - the opposite of high fashion. I follow the catwalk shows to monitor shapes and colours,” explains Cavell Thomas, founder and Creative Director of Inline London. “I am constantly testing interesting design features in our studio, together with unusual buttons to see if they can work in this industry.”

A well-presented and stylish uniformis essential for giving clients the right impression.

She continues: “Stretch is a key element to achieving this end result. Therapists spend so much time bending and stretching, so it is crucial that they can do this with ease. A performance fabric with breathable technology is also key.”

Also look out for clever design features such as double action backs and side vent panels to allow ease of movement and help to keep you cool.

On trend shades

As we enter the Summer season, salon wear designers have been taking inspiration from the catwalks to create a bouquet of striking seasonal shades:-

Blue

“This year blue, in all its guises, has been hailed as the new colour for 2014 and is reminiscent of clear open skies and calm seas,” explains Cavell. “Blue signifies freshness and the simplicity of nature which is why it works very well in the Spa industry. [Inline London] have a lovely range of blues on offer – cornflower, blueberry, cobalt and aquamarine.”

Plum / grape

“Purple shades are a firm favourite and have been a very popular choice for three years running. Our new grape colour, with pink undertones is a wonderful alternative to the standard purple shade as it is more vibrant and suits all skin tones,” adds Cavell.

Coral

“Radiant coral is still very much in demand for this season. Set to be the stand out colour of the season, it's punchy, bold and everything we've been waiting for to shake off those Winter blues!” says Cavell.

Lime green

“Lime green features strongly in all designer and high street collections for Summer 2014,” says Diamond Designs’ Aisling Kavanagh. “The Ashley and Diane tunics pay homage to this trend and add a pop of colour to your professional uniform.”

Sorbet

“No one can resist the sorbet shades (such as mint green, peach and pale pink) associated with a hot Summer. They are so girly, feminine and fresh. We launched these colours in direct response to the fashionable nail colours on offer for Spring / Summer 2014. They fit very well in nail bars and are a great alternative to the bright, vibrant colours in the range,” says Cavell.
