“Secondly, longer life expectancy has exponentially increased demand for anti- ageing as skin care regimes are being extended for ever longer periods. People are living longer so there aremillions of potential new consumers with ageing skin,” they add.
With this sector on course to experience substantial growth for the foreseeable future, many companies are working intently alongside their research laboratories in order to explore the very latest developments in anti-ageing skin care. In particular, turning their attention to plant- based stemcells and how these can be deployed within formulations to provide the very best in skin care.
Although you will no doubt be familiar with the sight of botanical ingredients and plant extracts listed on your current product labels, scientists have been delving deeper to discover how the efficacy of nature can be further utilised within cosmetics.
“Specialist skin care companies as well as the high street are embracing our new understanding of how cells function,” notes Dr Barbara Brockway, Scientific Advisor for BeautyLab London. “It is becomingmore andmore common to see skin care products with ‘stemcell technology’. This new generation of anti-ageing products is reminiscent of the early days of Botox®
or
‘Peptide Chemistry’. Brands again are responding to the public’s interest and asking scientists ‘what can we use?’ ”
Time to blossom
Themain function of our skin’s stemcells is to repair and regenerate tissue, yet as the ageing process inevitably takes its toll the amount of cells we possess begins to decrease. Therefore factors such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sun / age spots unfortunately becomemore noticeable as the regenerative process is no longer working as effectively as it once did.
“Fast regenerating tissues such as the epidermis are particularly dependent on their stemcells because only stemcells retain the capacity to divide into new tissues,” explains AnneMcDevitt, Director of Eminence Organic Skin Care Ireland. “The depletion of skin stemcells is regarded as one of the primary causes of skin ageing, because theymaintain balance in skin cells and regenerate damaged tissue. Skin stem cells have a limited life expectancy and as the human body ages, they’re not only adversely affected by internal and external stress factors, but they’re lower in numbers and less active.”
This is where plant stemcell technology begins to come in handy. In terms of anti- ageing skin care products, they can often mimic the body’s cells and when applied, they work to trigger self-renewal in human skin. “As stemcells are our body’s mechanisms for repair and replenishing, it makes sense that certainmolecules in complex plant extracts, when applied topically, wouldmake skin ‘feel damaged’ and so ‘stimulate’ stemcells’,” notes Dr Brockway. “For those of us simply wanting to keep our skin ‘youthful’, we can safely choose products that contain the latest stemcell technology, knowing they are designed after our natural stemcells.”
“The plant stemcells extract has the ability to effectively protect and reactivate our own dermoepidermal stemcells, strengthening the connective tissue structure and improving skin quality and texture,” adds Janssen Cosmetics. “By stimulating the activity of fibroblasts and keratinocytes in collagen and elastin output, the plant stem cells extract exerts a strong anti-ageing and anti-wrinkle effect on the skin.”
Much heated discussion and debate surrounding stemcells has taken place recently, with various sections of society deliberating particularly on the ethics of human stemcells use within themedical arena. Yet, it is important to alleviate any of your own or clients’ fears by stressing that human and plant stemcells are two entirely different entities. Assure themby noting that plant stems are only harvested fromplants and are extracted in such ways as to ensure protection of the living plant and also the surrounding environment.
