Lightening the load

The role of the dismounted soldier today involves carrying a lot of heavy equipment; this can include body armour, communications and IT, batteries, weapons, ammunition, night vision, food, water and in some cases, medical equipment. All this can weigh in excess of 75kg. To tackle this problem, in 2009, the MOD launched its ‘Reducing the Burden on the Dismounted Soldier’ Capability Vision to re-evaluate the equipment the dismounted soldier is required to carry, and found ergonomically smart solutions that weigh no more than 25kg. This vision requires technical, multi-disciplinary engineering and design teams that can work fast and deliver practical, user-centric solutions that professional soldiers can depend upon. Offering just this, one of Kinneir Dufort’s recent projects has involved the design and prototyping of a handheld device for a client in the defence sector, integrating new technology with minimising weight and maximising portability. Delivering a design that met all technical and ergonomic requirements, Kinneir Dufort has delivered a suite of prototypes ready to be evaluated by military personnel in real environments and real situations.

The David Clark Company will soon be introducing communication headsets featuring a supra-aural rest-on-ear design. The new DC PRO Series headsets feature a

lightweight yet rugged magnesium alloy platform that weighs about 8 ounces. The headsets will be available as passive noise attenuation and Active Hybrid Electronic Noise Cancellation models, featuring Bluetooth Wireless Technology and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for high-fidelity sound. Passive noise attenuating models include both dual ear and single ear styles. The DC

are fully customisable to a variety of communication applications, including low-to-medium noise environments such as data vans, UAV control/command centres and vehicles where comfort, durability and clear communication are essential.

Next level zooming

Over the last few months, Schmidt & Bender GmbH & Co KG have launched their 5-20x50 PMII Ultra Short scope, which measures less than 30cm in length, making it ideal for use with short and light weapon systems and may also be used in combination with a night vision device for accurate shots at night; the

3-27x56 PMII High Power model was also released and it is the first model of its series which takes zooming to the next level. New tactical riflescopes, the 1,1-8x24 PMII High Power, the 1,5-8x26 PMII Short Dot, and the 3-20x50 PMII Ultra Short are all set to be launched within the next six months.
