6 News Support for the IoR continues to grow

THE INSTITUTE of Refrigeration (IoR) Annual Dinner was held on 20 February 2014 at the Grange Hotel London for the third successive year. The support for the 114th Dinner to celebrate the anniversary of the Institute has grown in recent years, led by a dedicated working group. In his address, IoR president Professor Graeme Maidment highlighted the challenges of engaging with young people. “In the 1980s there was an overcapacity of engineers due to the decline in UK manufacturing, so we did not have to worry too much about youth engagement. But after many years of under recruiting in engineering we now have an undercapacity.

“Our industry is getting older and it is critical if we are to meet our future challenges that we bring in new blood. “Lots of people I talk to got into the sector due to a family or friend connection. It is important that we maintain

of a practical nature related to the field of refrigeration by a young person. The winner Goran Micic successfully researched and developed a working prototype – including most of the construction of the unit – for a freezer operating at -150°C as a replacement for nitrogen cooling technologies in medical laboratories. In recognition of the

those connections but that we also engage with all young people, which include other backgrounds and women. “The challenge is for us as an industry to convince young people that we are more interesting than telecoms or aerospace engineering. “It appears that we are getting traction on this subject. I have been to a number of schools and there is a growing demand for an engineering career.

“However, we can’t generate interest if there is no way to respond. We need you, as employers to open up more

work experience placements for students, to make contact with local schools careers days and talk to your local college about taking on apprentices and trainees.”

A number of presentations were made, and for his paper entitled HFO R1234ze for variable speed centrifugal chillers the Lightfoot medal for the best evening paper was awarded to Dr Andy Pearson. The paper was thorough in its evaluation of refrigerant alternatives, design modifications and testing.

Each year the Institute makes a Ted Perry Award for research

achievements of lifetime spent in refrigeration IoR’s Service Engineers’ Section made an award to John Webb of J&E Hall.

The J&E Hall Gold Medal for innovation, went to Professor Ruzhu Wang, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Professor Wang’s work provides a method of using solar heating to drive adsorption – thus propelling the feasibility of solar powered cooling for the future.

The after dinner speaker was the Rt Hon Michael Portillo who amused guests with his anecdotes and humour.
