A MULTISPORT FAMILY
BY CASSANDRA JOHNSON

As a family, the Schieles enjoy swimming in their backyard pool, biking along the Perkiomen Trail, running track and participating in local road races. After their mom started competing in triathlons, the kids saw how much fun it was and they were inspired to give it a try, too.

John Paul (13), Katie (11), Colleen (9) and Claire (8) were all new to multisport, but had a blast participating in their first event: the KidzTri3 Youth Triathlon and Duathlon at Lake Nockamixon in July 2013.

“It was a lot of fun going from one thing to the next,” Katie said.

Her siblings agree that the event was exciting and a great way to have fun while being active. But the best part of the event was that the whole family was involved — even younger siblings Danny (7) and Anna Jane (5) and all four grandparents were cheering from the sidelines.

The Schieles learned that doing multisport as a family is a great way to stay motivated and encourage each other.

“It was good to know that they were there doing the same thing that I was doing,” Katie said. “And it was good to have someone to cheer for.”

Colleen was participating in her first duathlon, and it really helped to have her family’s support. They were there to motivate her and calm her nerves.

“They said that I would do fine and not to worry,” Colleen said. “During the race they were cheering for me and it really made me feel good — and at the end, they all congratulated me.”

Even though some parts of the race were hard, from being a little rainy to hills on the bike course, the kids stayed positive and just kept going.

The Schiele family can’t wait to participate in more events and will continue to try their best and have fun. But most importantly, they look forward to doing it together.
