PACIFIC NORTHWEST
The recent NCAA decision to make triathlon an emerging sport for women will bring some much needed attention to the development of our junior athletes. This is especially true in the Northwest region where we have lagged behind the rest of the country in junior development. The region didn’t have any junior teams until 2012.

The good news is that in 2014 we will have at least three junior clubs representing the Northwest: Blue Fire Juniors in Snohomish and North King County (www.bluefirefitness.com), RockSteady Junior Triathlon Club in South King and Pierce County (www.rocksteadytri.com), and our most recent addition, Strive Junior Triathlon Club in the Portland, Ore., area (www.tri2strive.com).

Developing our junior club program is the key to providing NCAA schools with the first generation of experienced collegiate triathletes and the next generation of Olympians. It is such an exciting time for the sport in our region, with huge opportunities for our athletes to share their passion for triathlon. You can make a lasting impact on the sport, start a club, help get the word out about our junior clubs, help sponsors catch the vision for junior triathlon, or volunteer at a team ride or open water practice.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN
The 2014 USA Triathlon Rocky Mountain Region Talent ID Series will consist of seven independently produced sprint-distance triathlons. Each event meets a set of criteria ensuring the race is optimized for youth and junior athletes. This ensures a quality experience for those new to the sport as well as those wishing to compete against the best in the region. Each participant receives a series logo bag tag. The top 10 finishers at each event will earn points toward a season end tally. The top three athletes in the series (both youth and junior division for male and female totaling 12 athletes) will be rewarded with triathlon gear and an invitation to an elite skills camp in Colorado. For more information, visit www.usatriathlon.org/rockymountain.

Also, for the first time in many years, the region has a complete slate of Regional Championship events for 2014.

May 10: Duathlon, Barkin’ Dog Duathlon, Denver, Colo.
June 28: Aquabike/Aquathlon, Loveland Lake to Lake, Loveland, Colo.
July 12: Olympic-Distance (Special Qualifier), Echo Triathlon, Coalville, Utah
July 13: Olympic-Distance, Boulder Peak Triathlon, Boulder, Colo.
Aug. 9: Sprint Distance, Socorro Chile Harvest Triathlon, Socorro, N.M.
Aug. 17: Paratriathlon & Club Championship, YOLO Triathlon, Aurora, Colo.
Sept. 7: Long Course Championship, Harvest Moon Triathlon, Aurora, Colo.

SOUTHEAST
The region has long been known for the presence of an experienced group of race directors. This is no different in 2014. So come on, jump in, bring some friends to an event. Show them what our multisport world is all about. Please renew your USA Triathlon annual membership — doing so strengthens our sport.

The regional youth and junior team kept the momentum of an outstanding 2013 flowing into 2014, establishing a solid foundation for another bright year. A skills camp was held in Chattanooga, Tenn., and everyone had a blast. We have been building a movement of youth participation for kids of any skill level to get involved. Look for Splash & Dash events or youth triathlons popping up and be sure to cheer the kids on.

Our paratriathletes really are stellar and through a structured training program this spring, they are ready to take on National Championships.

Fewer events are included in this year’s Regional Club Series with focus on more head-to-head competition. The series will be administered in the Southeast Region community fueled by www.cmecompete.com. Let’s see a record number of clubs vying for the podium this year.
