Earning Your Spot: Deciphering the Code Needed to Represent USA Shooting in 2014

Selection procedures for events throughout the year have been posted. What does all the verbiage mean? What do you need to do to make a team?

Nothing evokes a stronger

sense of connection and belong- ing than the minute you earn that right to wear USA on your back. Earning the distinction re- quires all parts discipline, desire and dedication and once earned represents a reward far greater than anything else. The invitation to be a part of

the USA Shooting Team in 2014 won’t come easy. As always, it’s earned the old fashioned way through hard work. Making it this year means you’re on the leading edge of what will be an 800 day Olympic push towards Rio. It’s hard to determine during this journey what will be the most important moment for any one shooter, but with a World Cham- pionships, the Championship of the Americas and three domestic World Cups, there’s no question the time to start shaping that Olympic and Paralympic dream is upon us. “We’ve spent an extraordinary

amount of time over the last year with National Team Coaches to determine the most logical and benefi cial approach to selecting teams for competition,” said Dave Johnson, USA Shooting’s Director of Operations. “Using past ex- periences and gathering athlete and coach input, we feel we’ve got selection procedures in place for this year that will truly provide us with competitive teams and

allow us to achieve our competi- tion goals.” “We’re very careful and thor-

ough when it comes to the as- pect of identifying the athletes to represent the USA Shooting Team in competition,” said USA Shooting CEO Robert Mitchell. “There’s a lot of variables that go into it, and in the end, what you hope is that the best, most con- sistent athletes identify them- selves by their performances in selection matches and compe- tition. We strive to ensure that selection remains objective and that your performances dictate individual opportunity. We’re continually trying to adjust to the landscape around us and try- ing to come up with procedures that take advantage of the talent we do have currently while also helping nourish the potential of emerging athletes in the years to come.”

Selection procedures were announced in February and posted to USA Shooting’s web- site in the Policies and Proce- dures section. For full reference of them, please visit. In this ar- ticle, we extracted the major por- tions of the Selection Procedures for your convenience to help you more fully understand the pro- cess by which athletes can go about earning their spot on the USA Shooting Team in 2014.
