U.S. Athletes Finish Just Outside Finals At Bavarian Airgun Championships

There were a lot of close- but-not-quite moments for USA Shooting rifl e and pistol athletes with several of them coming up just short of spots in the fi nals at the Bavarian Airgun Champion- ships in Munich, Germany Janu- ary 22-26.

Historically, the Bavarian Air- gun Championships is one of the most strongly-contested events outside of the European World Cups. Competition features two days of matches with fi nals each day for juniors and open. Many countries use this competition for selection purposes for later events.

Athletes were chosen based on their performances at the recent Winter Airgun Champi- onships that were contested at the USA Shooting Center in early December. They competed alongside athletes from over 60 nations as the 2014 shooting competition season got under- way.

The U.S. highlight of these championships came from Ju- nior National Team member Alana Townsend (Kalispell, Mont., pic- tured) who qualifi ed for her fi rst international fi nal in Junior Wom- en’s Air Pistol. Townsend, 19, fi nished fi rst in qualifying with a 382/400 and would walk away with an eighth-place fi nish over- all. Her 382 is also a personal- best qualifying score, according to National Pistol Coach Sergey Luzov. Townsend also shot a 373 in qualifying on Day 2 to fi nish 14th overall. For perspective, a 382 would also have qualifi ed her in the Women’s Open Final.

Another strong Junior fi nish came from 15-year-old National Junior Team member Elizabeth Marsh (Searcy, Ark.) who fi nished ninth in Junior Women’s Air Rifl e with a qualifying score of 412.9, just .2 points away from making the fi nal.

National Air Rifl e Champion Connor Davis (Shelbyville,

Ky.)

struggled the fi rst day of com- petition, fi nishing in 61st place, but was nearly able to make the fi nals on the last day with a score of 627.2, just .1 points out of qualifying.

James Henderson (Midland, Ga./USAMU), a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and the USA Shooting National Development Team, was com- peting in his fi rst international match and fi nished in ninth place in Men’s Air Pistol. He tied for eighth place with a score of 580, but the tie-breaker to deter- mine who advances to the fi nals is based on center-ten shots in which Henderson just came up short, 15 to 18.
