Metering Department Provides the Necessary Link! Cimarron Electric Cooperative
www.cimarronelectric.com March 2014 One area of your co-op that has probably
changed the most over the years is the Metering Department. In the beginning, we had mechanical meters that members would read themselves, write the readings down and send in the mail. Today we have mechanical meters, digital meters and demand meters, etc. that not only read and record informa on, but they can communicate that informa on over the electrifi ed power lines! This ability to communicate informa on over the lines is called Power Line Carrier Technology (PLCT). The metering department has the responsibility to accurately meter and record each member’s electrical usage. We test meters and provide informa on about usage. We have done a very accurate and professional job in these areas in the past and con nue to do so. But now we do so much more!
Meter Reading) system. It was revolu onary in the fact that it uses the high voltage power lines to com- municate or send the meter readings in! We think this PLCT method is much be er than other meter read- ing methods. Some u li es contract meter readers. They have to drive to every meter each month. It is also be er than the radio frequency meters (RF) that some u li es are using. This meter reading system using the electric wires to communicate is becoming more important every day. It allows us to provide and receive be er informa on. It allows us to reduce cost and respond quicker to problems. Every department at Cimarron Electric is
Tim Hopkins, Metering Supervisor, is analyzing data from the AMR & TWACS Systems. A meter is plugged into the tes ng equipment on the table in background.
New technology is absolutely amazing and
provides much be er informa on than was previ- ously available. This new technology began around a decade ago when Cimarron began installing the fi rst communica ng meters. It was the fi rst phase imple- mented and completed in the A.M.R. (Automated
dependent on the Metering Department. They pro- vide the every day data that allows everyone else to do their jobs more eff ec vely. They install meters with two-way communica ons at every new service that Cimarron builds. They also meter and provide commu- nica ons at primary and secondary loca ons as well as at substa ons. These communica on and automa- on technologies can monitor the grid, detect distur- bances and can help us in re-rou ng power to reduce the numbers that may be aff ected by outages.
It sends the meter readings in over the high voltage lines! (Con nued on back page)
