Youth News

As OEC’s premier youth leadership programs, Youth Tour and Energy Camp happen to occur two weeks apart. Final preparations are being made and we don’t want your student(s) to miss out. Youth Tour, a seven-day all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., has been described by former participants as a “once-in-a-lifetime trip.” Each year, we sponsor four local students to attend Youth Tour alongside 70 others from across Oklahoma. In a nutshell, the phases of the contest are as follows:

 Students must submit a 500- to 1,000-word essay answering the following question: Cooperatives follow a set of guidelines called the Rochdale Principles. Which one of the seven principles do you fi nd most important and why? Essays are due March 3 (see mailing, faxing and e-mailing instructions below);

 Ten fi nalists will be chosen to present a speech over their essays’ topics at the Youth Tour Banquet and Speech Contest April 3;

 T e fi nalists will undergo a short interview with a panel of judges the night of the banquet; and

 Four winners are chosen to attend Youth Tour June 13-20.

While on Youth Tour this summer, the winners will tour famous landmarks in and around the nation’s capital. T ey will also enjoy a Broadway play, a dinner cruise on the Potomac River and an opportunity to meet and speak with Oklahoma’s congressional delegation. All Youth Tour materials—including an interactive resource guide—can be found at www.okcoop.org.
