Lightning response

The use of electrotherapy in cosmetics can be traced back through a number of medical journals to the end of the 19th century, but just because it isn’t a new treatment protocol, it doesn’t mean there hasn’t been any developments in this field over the last 120 years.

From varying wavelengths and techniques, through to the application of specialised gels and serums to help enhance the effects of the electrical pulses, the field of facial electrotherapy has evolved to ensure that your clients see the virtually instantaneous results they’ve come to expect from a modern beauty treatment.

“In a down-turned economy, consumer spending habits have changed to become more frugal,” says Candice Gardner, Education Training Manager for the IDI.

“These frugal consumers are seeking time-sensitive services that still deliver rapid results. Introducing electrical modalities into the professional treatment will enable the skin therapist to supercharge their treatments for highly targeted results that fix skin issues fast.

“It can also help keep regular clients motivated to return by introducing some variety to treatments. Using various modalities allows the skin therapist to perform advanced exfoliation options, penetrate active ingredients deeper and quicker into the skin and treat specific skin conditions more effectively for targeted results,” adds Candice.

What’s your type?

Of course, the first stage of introducing electrical treatments into your salon is to first establish which treatment modality you believe would be of benefit to both your clients and your salon.

“Your choice of modality comes down to the treatment outcomes you want to achieve, the degree of flexibility you require, investment and the options your product line has for working with different machines or technologies,” notes Candice.

So what are the different modalities available? Technologies such as Microcurrent, Faradic, Galvanic, High Frequency, Radio Frequency, and even Ultrasound all come under the umbrella of facial electrotherapy and each offers its own set of benefits, an overview of which are detailed below:

Microcurrent • Tightens the skin and softens lines

• Helps to delay the ageing process and prevent further damage by stimulating collagen

• Only a mild sensation felt – often described as a relaxing treatment

• Helps to enhance natural features by plumping out collagen

Faradic • Strengthens muscles • Tones the face • Replaces normal exercise

• Specific muscles / areas can be targeted

Galvanic (Desincrustation) • Increases circulation

• Relaxes pores making extractions easier

• Deep cleanses the skin • Stimulates nerve endings • Has a softening and drying effect Galvanic (Iontophoresis) • Improves skin texture • Creates warmth • Frees oxygen • Firms the tissues

Microcurrent treatments such as the Bio-Ultimate Platinum help to tighten the skin and softens lines

• Calms redness / reduces circulation • Sedates / soothes nerve endings

• Has an astringent effect on pores to help tighten them

High Frequency • Helps to improve poor circulation • Helps relax the tissues • Improves fine lines • Improves dry / dehydrated skin • Improves tired-looking skin Radio Frequency • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles • Stimulates collagen production • Tightens loose skin Ultrasound • Increases blood flow • Stimulates collagen production • Smoothes fine lines and wrinkles • Tightens loose skin • Contracts enlarged pores • Reduces puffiness

With a plethora of modalities on offer it can be difficult to choose, but fortunately, there are a number of systems available to meet your every need; from stand-alone units focusing on specific treatments, which are ideal for those short on space or who want to specialise in a particular area, through to combined treatment units that offer more than one modality to increase your salon’s flexibility.
