Girl power

Sally Penford, UK and Eire Education Manager at Dermalogica and the International Dermal Institute, tells us more about her professional and personal passions…

 I ended up in the beauty industry because…I suffered with Eczema as a child and became increasingly frustrated by doctors who told me that I would grow out of it. By the time I was 14 I had decided that if I wanted to improve it, I would have to study the subject for myself. I set to getting the necessary qualifications and then joined the London College of Fashion to complete my HND.

 An average day for me is…I’m awake at 6.30am for a precious hour and leisurely breakfast with my twin baby girls and my husband and then it’s a mad dash to get everything and everybody primed and prepped for the day ahead. Once at work, no two days are the same. Ultimately my primary goal is to ensure that our hundred or so skin therapists who join us across the country for training each day feel that they have received the best education ever and are now part of the family. I work with a big team of incredible women that make that happen.

 The best thing about my job is… Seeing a skin therapist achieve financial and personal success through education, innovation and sheer determination. This experience is further enriched by the fact that 98% of all professional skin therapists are women, and that these professionals attract a clientele which is 92% female – literally creating more women entrepreneurs than any other industry in the world.

My biggest achievement to date has been…Professionally one of the many highlights of my 23 years with Dermalogica is presenting to several thousand people at our International Congress in Istanbul. To see skin therapists from over 40 countries sharing the same challenges and the same joys in one voice was an inspiration. On a personal note however, my greatest achievement is my baby girls.

 I am at my happiest when…I’m home with my family. Give me a house full of people, children laughing and running around like mad things plus lots of hearty home cooking and I am a very happy woman.

My ideal weekend would be…Welly boots, a cold bright Autumn day and a walk in the Surrey Hills. Then maybe finishing up in a little country pub somewhere for a cheeky G & T.

My favourite book is…Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks, a story about the

events and attitudes towards the Battle of the Somme and life in the trenches. It moved me to tears, made me feel incredibly humbled and has continued to stay with me.

My top beauty secret is…I don’t believe that our industry is about beauty, it’s about taking care of the health of the skin and body. So if you want the healthiest skin you can have, it’s no secret, your key product must be sunscreen! You can have the best skin care regime in the world but if you are not protecting your skin every day from daylight, you are causing damage.

 The best piece of advice I have been given is…My parents impressed upon myself and my two sisters that no matter what we ended up doing with our lives as long as it gave us joy and pride, we had succeeded. I knew as soon as I joined Dermalogica that I had found something that I felt great pride in and I still love coming to work 23 years later.
