SkillELECTRIC call for apprentice entries 

The SkillELECTRIC 2014 competition has started its search for the UK’s best

apprentice electrician. During the competition, entrants will be judged on a series of challenging practical tests in a bid to be named this year’s SkillELECTRIC national champion.

The event has been designed to promote and

showcase high standards and skills across the electrical industry. Between April and June there will be a number of regional events across the UK. Those who score most highly will progress to a UK final held in November at the prestigious Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC, the UK’s largest skills and careers show, with more than 80,000 visitors. Competitors may also have the chance

to represent their country and compete at international level at future WorldSkills events. The Joint Industry Board (JIB) is the lead

sponsor of the event. ‘The JIB is committed to raising standards in our industry, and our support of SkillELECTRIC is helping to do this,’ said David Thomas, ECS strategic development manager at the JIB. The competition closes for entries on 21 March.  For more information, call 0800 612 0742 or visit http://worldskillsuk.apprenticeships.org.uk

Vigilance urged as

van crime grows Contractors and tradespeople must step up security to protect their tools, plant equipment and personal technology from the risk of theft, specialist insurer for the building trades, the Electrical Contractors’ Insurance Company (ECIC), has urged. Over the past year, the ECIC has seen

the value of claims for theft of tools from contract sites and vans rise from £2,865 on average per claim to £5,091. The most common thefts are from vehicles parked in hotel car parks and at B&Bs. Of all loss claims reported to ECIC in 2012-13, 17 per cent were for thefts. While the majority of claims were for theft of tools from vans, higher-value items such as laptops were also the subject of a number of claims, along with equipment on site, highlighting the need to ensure that not only vans are locked but that tools and equipment at a contract site are as secure as possible.  See pages 50-51 of this issue for advice on how to combat van crime.
