ECA News Shaping the future of your industry
Current vacancies A lot is said these days about the value of ‘differentiation’ – essentially, standing out from the rest. This is as true for individuals as it is for companies. It is clear that, for many professionals working in ECA member companies, an important route to standing out is being actively involved with the issues of the day. If you take a look at professional networking sites, such as LinkedIn,
you will see that many of the top people employed by ECA members proudly highlight that they have experience on influential ECA committees. Professionals talk about their ECA committee experience because it has brought them real benefits. That experience usually includes:
Presidential meeting
A unique gathering of ECA past presidents took place on 31 January at Tallow Chandlers Livery Hall, Central London. Around 40 people attended a special past president’s dinner, bringing together many of the presidents who have served from 1979 onward. Current president Phil Fagg, vice president Andy Basham and
ECA group chief executive officer Steve Bratt were also guests at the event, which was organised by Peter Hughes, who served as ECA president in 2000. Entertainment was provided by musicians from the Guildhall School of Music.
Directly influencing legislation, standards and guidance in our industry A clearer understanding of what is going on in our industry right now, and how it fits together
Advance notice of what is on the way in the industry Networking with topic specialists and industry peers Hearing other ideas, views and perspectives, and meeting key figures from elsewhere in the industry.
These professionals conclude that their active role in the industry is received positively by others, including current and prospective employers. Many employers regard ECA information and networking as adding value to their business. With this in mind, the ECA now has vacancies on two of its most
important standing committees: the business policy and practice (BPP) committee, and the education and training (E&T) committee (E&T).

Business policy and practice (BPP) committee The BPP committee is becoming increasingly important within the ECA. Essentially, it steers ECA policy on a range of issues that affect the business environment for ECA members, whether they are opportunities or problems. Examples range from contracts, legislation and supply chain requirements, to business and customer green grants. You certainly do not have to be an expert in all of these areas, but it will help if you are familiar with how some of these issues affect not just your own company, but also other building services contractors. Although its remit is very broad, the BPP does not cover everything that the ECA deals with. So (for example), it does not cover technical issues or industrial relations, which have their own standing committees.
Education and training committee The E&T committee steers the ECA’s policy on everything concerning skills in our industry, from apprentice training to new professional standards and qualifications. You certainly do not have to be an academic expert in E&T issues to join the E&T committee, but it will help if you have a good grasp not just of your own company’s skills requirements, but of those in the wider building services industry – and particularly the electrotechnical sector.

Meetings Both of these committees meet three times a year, normally in London, and members’ expenses are paid for by the ECA. Standing committee members are nominated by ECA staff or ECA members, and selected by the current members of the committee, based on an assessment of suitability for the committee in question.
