ASRA CONFERENCE PREVIEW 2014 6–9 APRIL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK
In this month’s edition, the ASRA Management Commitee gives a preview of the 2014 ASRA conference
ABOVE: The historic city of York BELOW: York Minster
T
he ASRA conference is the largest student accommodation conference in Europe. This year the conference heads north to the fantastic
University of York. As we enter a time of significant change in the
higher education sector, and in the accommodation area in particular, this year ASRA has set a theme of: 'Our next challenges…are our customers really satisfied?' as we look ahead to what the future may hold for student accommodation in a university or college seting over the coming months and years. The conference will open on Sunday with the
popular World Café icebreaker, allowing colleagues from all over the country and our international delegates to come together to discuss the hot topics of interest. This is an extremely popular start and topics covered previously include how to measure satisfaction and working with private partners. Meanwhile, the annual ASRA exhibition will once again have a record number of providers exhibiting all under the one roof. We also have the return of the Supplier Showcase format that proved to be very well received in 2013. This year’s keynote speaker will be Philip Hesketh,
a professional speaker from Hesketh Talking who will address 'How to persuade and influence people'.
Other speakers include the return of popular legal eagle Hilary Crook and the interesting sessions on social media. Perhaps in recognition of the increasing place
that residential support plays in Student Accommodation, we will also have sessions on how to support our customers whether it is with mental health problems, alcohol awareness, energy awareness or cross-cultural conflicts. ThinkingPeople will be joining the ASRA crowd
once again, looking at how to resolve cross-cultural conflict as we all realise how international students continue to play a big role in the sector with increasing numbers and the increasing international offices now being set up to recruit more. Away from the learning, there will be the usual
array of ASRA networking opportunities, including a locally themed relaxed evening, a trip off campus for the meal for those staying for the middle evening and, of course, the annual ASRA Gala Dinner. As a VFM conference the price to atend is £455
(full package) for members and £610 (full package) for non-members. Rates are lower to atend just one or two days of the conference. The commitee looks forward to welcoming you
to York to what promises to be the best and most informative conference yet. UB
