UNITE ACQUIRES CENTRAL NEWCASTLE SITE
The UNITE Group continues its regional development with the acquisition of a 200,000 sq ft site in Newcastle city centre. The new scheme will have a
total development cost of £31m and is expected to deliver a 10% yield on cost, in line with UNITE’s target returns. The site will be transformed into a home for approximately 600 students, close to the city’s two universities, and is targeted to open in 2016. Richard Simpson,
Durham unveils landmark building design
Durham University has unveiled plans for a £10m new building to house its world-renowned Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics. The original Ogden Centre for
Fundamental Physics, established by an earlier £2m gift from the Ogden Trust, was opened in 2002. It incorporates two institutes: the Institute for Computational Cosmology, one of the world’s premier theoretical cosmology groups, and the only Institute for Particle
Physics Phenomenology globally. The new building has been made
necessary by the centre’s rapid growth and academic success, and will enable it to maintain its leading global position in the decades ahead. The building will be located next
to the Physics department on South Road, Durham. Residents will be able to have their say on the designs at two public consultations this January at the University’s Calman Centre.

good progress with our selective regional development programme, and is a prime example of how we are investing the proceeds from our 2013 share placing; it is in an excellent central location, well positioned for both Newcastle’s universities and in a market we expect to experience continued growth.” The new property will
expand UNITE’s existing presence in Newcastle, where the group has four properties comprising over 1,000 beds. The property will include communal space designed to enhance students’ living and learning experience, UNITE’s latest specification en suite cluster rooms, Wi-Fi internet throughout the property and environmental features, such as LED lighting.
