For me, honestly, it’s not about individual accomplishments, individual

Happy new year! Firstly, big congratulations to CIPP’s
Karen Thomson who has received a HMRC External Engagement award for helping to ensure that the impact of real time information (RTI) on employers and their payroll processes was minimal. Congratulations also go to those organisations that were accredited or reaccredited under the Payroll Quality
Partnership (PQP) in December. For anyone not aware of the PQP scheme, it is an accreditation awarded by CIPP to organisations that can demonstrate ‘best practice’ in the development of staff. My own organisation achieved PQP in 2009 and was reaccredited in 2011 and 2013. We find that it is a great driver to ensure that we focus on learning, development and process improvement within the team. PQP also raises our profile (in a positive way) within the business as a whole.
So, what’s been happening? Lots of work is going on behind the scenes to plan the events for 2014. Hot Topics are being run in London and Leeds in February and Bristol in March – from experience, it is worth taking the time out of the office to attend if you get the opportunity. Bookings for National Forums are open; however, places are taken up very quickly so if you want to attend,

I am writing this from India after having spoken at two conferences here. The National Academy of Indian Payroll (NAIP) were running two conferences and the CIPP was asked to speak on the subject of global payroll. In preparing for this presentation it was pleasing to note how much we have progressed in 2013. The international factcard library is developing well and we hope to bring
in many more countries during 2014. We are developing links with many countries as well as
strengthening our links with Canada, America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and, of course, India. The Certificate in Global Payroll Management was launched in the autumn and we already have bookings confirmed for the next cohort. In addition to this we now run country specific courses, mainly focused in Europe. As a result of my presentation the CIPP has been invited to provide services to at least one multi-national company. Our experience and knowledge of working in India will be shared with other institutes later this year as India is perceived by many as the country to expand services into. We have now outgrown our Solihull head office and so we
are hoping to finalise the purchase of much larger offices shortly. Hopefully by the time you read this we will have a moving date. I hope to be able to tell you more about this exciting new development in the next issue of this magazine. It is pleasing to note that the automatic enrolment self- assessment exercise has taken off well. This exercise is aimed at preparing those organisations that are yet to stage to ensure that they are aware of what is required of them and by when. One of the main benefits of completing this exercise is the summary phone call following completion which provides you with advice and guidance based on your results. As we start the new year, it is also worth considering the Payroll Assurance Scheme. When engaged into the scheme the CIPP will send one of our qualified assessors to establish whether or not your procedures are robust and that your payroll is complying with relevant legislation to reduce the risk of compliance penalties should HMRC come in for an audit – potentially saving your organisations £thousands!
time is of the essence. This month’s issue also talks about the 2014 Annual Payroll
and Pensions Conference, which, as it is our 30th anniversary, will hopefully be the best ever. Details of sessions and speakers are still to be finalised, but the venue will be Celtic Manor on 9 –10 October. You may recall that mid-way through 2013 we asked you to complete a membership survey. (Many thanks to those of you who took the time to respond.) This month, we share some of the results and outcomes of the survey, along with some changes that we plan to instigate over the coming months. On a personal level, I was delighted to pass my first MSc assignment of Year 2 and am eagerly (!) awaiting the results of my second assignment which was around analysing and improving financial performance. The next module I’m working on is ‘management of an acquisition, merger and disposal of a business’ – thankfully I’ve got some time to think about this one as the deadline for submission is not until mid-March.
