CIPP Making News CIPP’s Karen Thomson receives HMRC stakeholder award

KAREN THOMSON, CIPP’s Associate director of policy, research and strategic visibility, has been awarded a HMRC Stakeholder Award. The award was presented by David Gauke MP at HM Revenue & Customs’ (HMRC’s) London headquarters, on 3 December 2013. HMRC’s annual awards are given out to recognise stakeholders who help to make the UK’s

tax system simpler and more transparent. Karen, who is also a member of HMRC’s Administrative Burdens Advisory Board, was awarded this prestigious honour for the work she contributed to helping ensure that the impact of real time information on employers and their payroll processes was minimal.

Karen commented: “As part of my role and the rest of the team at the CIPP we aim to represent the views of our members and reduce any potential burdens with existing and future policies. For this work to be recognised by HMRC is a huge honour, not just for me but the CIPP Policy & Research team, and all in our profession, without whom this job would be impossible.”

PQP accreditations THE CIPP is pleased to announce that Virgin Media has obtained the prestigious Payroll Quality Partnership (PQP) accreditation and that the following organisations have all been re-accredited: l Specsavers l Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) l Oxford City Council l Liverpool Direct Ltd l CGI (formerly Logica UK Ltd) l Menzies Chartered Accountants l NHS Shared Business Services l The Buccleuch Estates Limited. The PQP award recognises organisations that apply best practice in the development of their payroll professionals to enable them to provide customers with the highest level of service. Lindsay Melvin, Chief executive of the CIPP, said: “We are absolutely delighted Virgin Media has now joined the ranks of organisations to achieve this respected accreditation. I would also like to commend the companies that have achieved PQP re-accreditation – their ongoing dedication to their payroll staff’s professional development is a testament to the success that PQP is today.”

AE online self-assessment exercise

IN NOVEMBER, the CIPP launched a new online automatic enrolment (AE) self- assessment exercise, which employers can use to check their readiness for automatic enrolment. The exercise has been designed for organisations who have not yet staged, to help address the three mistakes that most organisations seem to be making. The benefits of completing the online self- assessment exercise (which can be found at www.cipp.org.uk/en/cipp-services/pensions- automatic-enrolment-exercise.cfm) are: l greater understanding of what you need to be doing, and by when, to ensure that

you can implement automatic enrolment successfully l a twenty-minute telephone debrief based on your own organisation’s current situation l specific recommendations based on your needs, using the exercise responses l assistance in compliance with the employer duties, and therefore will reduce the risk of fines associated with non- adherence. For just £25 + VAT for CIPP members

(£35 + VAT for non-members) you can complete the self-assessment exercise which asks questions based on our experience and understanding of automatic enrolment.

To arrange access, contact the CIPP to arrange payment via credit card over the phone. You will then be sent a link to the online self-assessment exercise. You should spend approximately fifty minutes, preferably with your automatic enrolment team, completing the exercise online. CIPP will contact you to discuss your results and make recommendations to assist you in your preparations.
