Aluminum Division Striving for Advancement

Te AFS Aluminum Division takes an active role in

educating the metalcasting industry, driving research advancements and promoting the industry, which have re- sulted in critical accomplishments this past year, including: • E357 Alloy Standardization: This project has further expanded the use of castings by providing casting de- signers with an additional alloy that meets their needs.

• Hot Tearing—206/535 Study: This program provided feedback on the effect of mold temperatures and grain refinement on reducing hot tearing defects in 206 and 535 alloys.

• Optimizing Mechanical Properties—New Per- manent Test Bar Mold: The project resulted in the development of a new permanent mold test bar mold, which is currently under review for acceptance by the American Society for Testing Standards. The Aluminum Division also is driving several ongo-

ing technical projects: • Helium Enhanced Semi-Permanent Mold: The goal is to improve the productivity and properties of semi- permanent mold aluminum castings.

• Ultra High Strength, Light Weight Al-Si Alloys With Ba: Research is being conducted to determine whether Al-Si modified with Ba improves mechanical properties.

• Aluminum Casting Handbook Revision. Those interested in learning and advancing them-

selves or their company while promoting what metalcast- ers do as an industry are invited to attend an Aluminum Division meeting. The division focuses on permanent mold, sand casting, metal matrix, processes and proper- ties, gating and risering, and molten metal processing. Potential upcoming technical projects include a study on dimensional variation in semi-permanent molding. Te next Aluminum Division Meeting is January 21 at 9:30 a.m. at AFS Headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill.
