SONY: ‘VITA IS A DECENT, PROFITABLE BUSINESS’
P
layStation has dismissed critics that have accused it of abandoning the Vita. The portable console went unmentioned during the fi rm’s Gamescom press conference earlier this month. The console has not set the sales charts alight, but CEO Andrew House insists Vita is still a viable and profi table platform. “I’m fairly comfortable with the strategy around the Vita business for a couple of factors,” he told MCV. “Remote Play is going to be a
signifi cant benefi t for the device that will only become more resonant over time, simply by the fact that you will have more and more great PS4 content. All of the great PS4 content we showed at Gamescom will be playable on Vita, so in that sense we showcased a Vita line-up as well. “The second thing is, if I look at it purely on a business basis,

we have got to a point with the fi nancial model around version two of the Vita, where it is a decent, profi table hardware business, as well as having the content and network revenue streams as well. So the Vita is in great shape. “We are very conscious of
the fact that the landscape has changed for portable devices. In Japan where portable gaming has a whole diff erent presence and resonance, the feedback from Japanese developers is that because of the momentum that Vita has in Japan, it is now a good and viable platform for them to publish on. We will look to sustain it with a select amount of good triple-A content, to ensure the audience remains enthusiastic.” Sony has this summer launched a new TV advertising campaign for Vita, while new Vita software bundles will launch later this year.
