MP stops by to meet apprentice

An apprentice working with Chelmsford Electrical was awarded his certifi cate from MP Simon Burns during a recent visit to the company. Luke Goddard, 21, received his Electrotechnical Level 3 NVQ after successfully completing his four-year apprenticeship and undergoing various assessments by training provider JTL. He now hopes to go on to pursue a long career in electronics. Simon Burns MP also met management staff and other

apprentices during his time at Chelmsford Electrical, and was shown some of the testing and in-house training facilities. Says Luke: ‘Chelmsford Electrical has given me excellent

training and vital experience, while JTL has supported and guided me expertly.’

Across the country Next generation forum

The South East region held its fi rst ‘Next Generation’ forum on 12 September. The forum is aimed at electricians and managers that have the potential to be the leaders, directors or senior managers of the future, and will enable them to understand meeting chairmanship and business strategy, as well as introduce networking opportunities and assist with engaging with the ECA. At the fi rst forum, six young managers attended and listened to

presentations from Carolann Marshall of ECIC and Steve Jerram of Schneider Electric before an open discussion on common business issues. All agreed that it had been a worthwhile meeting, and the forum is set to meet again in November.

NI ECA members help boost

apprenticeship recruitment It’s good news for the Northern Ireland electrical contracting sector, as 100 new apprentices have recently joined the local industry. Derek Thompson, chief executive of ETT, was joined by Alfi e Watterson, regional offi cer, at the ETT induction week to welcome the latest ECA recruits. Derek Thompson said: ‘ECA members have clearly played their

part this year in helping to achieve the 17 per cent apprentice recruitment increase. ‘Apprenticeship recruitment

is often viewed as a barometer to gauge the state of the industry. The recruitment signs are encouraging and may well indicate that the domestic and national construction market is beginning to improve.’ Commenting on the induction

The West Midlands region recently held a joint branch meeting, which included members from Birmingham, Mercia, Shropshire and North Staff ordshire, followed by a clay pigeon shooting competition where guests were shooting for the coveted Joint Branch Shield. The trophy was won for the third consecutive year out of four by the Mercia Branch (Birmingham branch having won it previously). Tom Welch, who organised

the event and shoots on behalf of the Birmingham branch, presented the shield to Trevor Allsopp, representing the Mercia Branch amateur shooters. The event was sponsored by LED Group, Rob Peake and Leigh

Morrin, who provided an excellent presentation on LED lighting and what contractors should look out for when purchasing LEDs to ensure they install quality products with a lasting longevity.
