OBITUARIES Alex Harrower Alex Harrower was president of the ECA in
1976-77, the year of its 75th anniversary. He was one of a small group of influential
members who, together with the moderate and forward-thinking electrical contracting union of the time, the EETPU, helped introduce innovations such as the Joint Industry Board (JIB), the holiday credits scheme and private medical insurance for both employers and employees. They also developed the ECA’s insurance companies, which helped provide a firm financial base for the association. Alex held many positions in the ECA at
local, regional and national level, and went on to become President of the European Electrical Contractors’ Association (AIE). He died, aged 93, on 13 October, and is
survived by his wife Una, who accompanied him on his presidential duties in the UK and Europe, and by his two sons, one of whom, John, is also a past president of the ECA and AIE.
Alan North
Alan North served as president of the ECA for 2006-07. He also worked tirelessly for the association in his local region, as well as nationally, becoming branch chairman of Maidstone and
East Kent branch in 1987-88. He was South East regional chairman
in 2002-03, and became joint chairman of the South East regional Joint Industry Board (JIB) in 1985, serving on the ECA Labour Relations Committee and the National Board of the JIB from 1986 until 2001. He has also sat on a number of ECA
national committees, including the ECA Council. Alan was born in Northfleet, Kent,
on 5 June 1944, joining his father’s electrical and refrigeration company as an apprentice in 1960. He studied at Medway College of Technology and in 1973 obtained a full City and Guilds Technological Certificate, with endorsements in industrial illumination and industrial control systems, taking over the running of the family company, AS North Limited, in 1978. Alan died, aged 69, on 21 November,
and is survived by his wife Thelma and their children.
n Steve Bratt, ECA group CEO, said: ‘We are all deeply saddened to hear of the deaths of ECA past presidents Alex Harrower and Alan North. Both served the ECA with distinction and contributed greatly to the association on a local, regional and national level. They will be missed by many, and we offer our condolences to their families.’
