From the editor... W

elcome to the December issue of ECA Today. After another challenging 12 months for the industry, it’s starting to look as if the recovery we’ve all been waiting for may fi nally be arriving. Certainly, the latest fi gures for the construction sector appear signifi cantly more encouraging than when we entered the

festive season last year. That’s welcome news as we approach 2014 – even though many members will still face a tough, challenging market for some time to come, as the slow recovery gathers pace.

Looking ahead As we approach the holiday season, it’s the traditional time to look forward to

the year ahead. In this issue, we take a look at some of the key initiatives and technologies that off er potential opportunities for electrical contractors. Our article ‘State of play’ (pages 22-25) explores how government policies in the energy solutions arena are set to develop over the coming 12 months, and what you can expect to see happen as the year progresses. We also consider why the implications of maintaining critical energy supplies

have generated signifi cant growth in the market for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solutions (page 52-55) and how traditional areas of business with new demands can off er fresh opportunities (pages 36-40). In addition, we look at some not-so-traditional potential markets – focusing on the latest developments in electric vehicle infrastructure (pages 32-35), whose time may be approaching.

Working hard Elsewhere, we spotlight some of the crucially important work the ECA is engaged

with on the national and international stage in setting industry standards, representing the ECA and UK on powerful international bodies, and working for members’ interests (pages 27-29). We’d also like to hear your views on ECA Today, so we can make sure it’s the best magazine it can be for members. We have a short reader survey on pages 41-42 – which you can fi ll in online if you prefer – and would very much appreciate it if you could spare a couple of minutes to answer the brief questions. There’s the added incentive of a new iPad Mini on off er in a prize draw for those who respond. Finally, I’d like to wish all our readers a very enjoyable Christmas and an exceptionally prosperous New Year. See you again in 2014.
