IN THE spotlight

QYour hero or heroine from history?

A Another TV chef – this time Keith Floyd. He was a pioneer and brought world food to our living rooms and was never without a glass of red to wash it all down.

QYour hero or heroine alive and well?

A Arnold Schwarzenegger, from humble beginnings to world champion, blockbuster action star, business man, politician and activist!

QWhat’s the point of IT?

A It’s all about global communication. IT opens up education and access to healthcare, it helps people to share ideas and it can be a great leveller. With it we can help the world be a better place for us and for the generations that follow.

QWhen it comes to energy resources (for data centres/IT) is the glass half-empty

or half-full?

A Half-full, the amount of idle IT equipment consuming energy any one

time is staggering. There are technologies available to stop this. Our industry is about innovation and finding better solutions to all kinds of problems, so I’m sure we can do even better.

QPet hates?

A People who drive without indicating, I know it adds an element of surprise to the motoring experience but when I give way at a roundabout and they take the first exit… grrr! Also internment for those folk who drive a 40mph through the villages and continue at 40 in the 60mph areas!

QWhere does the time machine take you and why?

A To Rome to witness the days of the Roman Empire at first hand, stopping

off during the dot.com boom to collect my shirt on the way back!

QBring Your Own Device or Bring Your Own Disaster (waiting to happen at

some point in the future)? A I am a big fan of one device covers all.

I don’t believe many organisations have a clearly defined BYOD policy and the security risks posed by lost devices plus the complication of clearing confidential information from an ex-employee’s personal device are certainly a disaster waiting to happen.

A tablet on the other hand may fit the bill and many people are already using personal iPads day-to-day.

My mobile phone now functions as a cycle computer, sat nav, calorie counter, media player, email client... The list is endless, but it is long way from being a serious tool for the workplace.
