The importance of I/O management for next-generation data centre architectures

Managing application performance and availability is difficult. There is a tremendous amount of infrastructure between the application users and the storage devices that hold the data. Every piece of the infrastructure needs to operate efficiently to maintain

high performance and availability. Conversely, any bottlenecks within the infrastructure can quickly degrade the user experience and business effectiveness. While management of this infrastructure has typically been focused on the physical components, monitoring and managing the flow of data I/O through the system has often been underrepresented although that can be most critical to overall application performance. Big Data increases the complexity of I/O management. By Shaun Walsh, Senior Vice President Marketing and Corporate Development, Emulex.
