editor’s note

Cloudy Frankfurt Frankfurt at the end of October was the place to be as Angel Business Communications’ Powering the Cloud event brought together a large, and varied, cross-section of vendors, Channel and end users, all keen to explore and share their experiences of the many new and compelling technology and business developments that are driving the ICT space right now. As the title suggests, The Cloud had to be given pride of place. There may be a few folks on the planet who haven’t heard about it, but in the main it’s not so much the lack of visibility that causes problems, rather the absence of a helpful/meaningful set of Cloud definitions. Is Cloud simply outsourcing under another name? Is there a difference between Cloud and utility computing? And does everyone understand what is meant by the terms Private, Public and Hybrid Clouds?

As ever, the early adopter phase of any new technology or business is surrounded by confusion and plenty of obfuscation as the vendors and the Channel jockey for position. Not desperately helpful for end users, but then the early days of virtualisation were anything but transparent, yet now the technology is well understood and, it seems, well-implemented. However, this time things are a little different. Whereas virtualisation seemed to be the only game in town, giving everyone plenty of time to kick the tyres before making any commitments, at the present time Cloud is vying with Big Data, BYOD and Software Defined Everything, to name but three other hot topics. So, end users are being bombarded with a whole host of ‘must- haves’, and are entitled to be confused and not a little exasperated.

If one theme shone out from the Powering the Cloud event, it was the necessity for end users to understand what the business needs were, before committing to any major changes in their ICT infrastructure. Once these are well understood, then is the time to look at what’s on offer to help achieve this.
