degrees on Saturday), a handsome, thriv- ing campus, and a great program of activi- ties organized by Betsy Singer Gluck and Betty Howe Shannon. I know we all went home glowing from renewing our friendships, sharing old memories, and garnering new ones. In true ’53 spirit, we broke a reunion record: at 33 strong, we had the largest number of attendees for a 60th reunion. On hand were Sylvia Shaw Brandhorst, Carolyn Roberts Breakenridge, Helen Briwa, Sylvia Vasselin Caswell, Ann Houston Conover, Elinor Reponen Cronin, Barbara Fee Dickason, Robbie Smith Exner, Norma Fisher, Janet Tins - ley Fiske, Betsy Gluck, Ruth Thomas Goldzier, Doris Janitschek Hall, Grace Ackerknecht Harrigan, Mary Lyman Heist, Mary “Rusty” Lyon Holton, Betty Hill Johnson, Jean Cranse Larsen, Ju - dith McEndy Lynch, Jacqueline Bailey Martin, Judith Axford McCoy, Abigail McKay, Jacqueline Travis McNally, Bar - bara Holden Moulton, Natalie Jones Neri, Jean Pennucci, Deborah Phillips, Alice Gundersen Schofield, Joanne Teale Snell, Lois Kite VanWagner, Cynthia Kain Wigton, Louise Berke Wulff, and I. Joining us were eight husbands and two legacies: Kate Neri ’11, Til Neri’s grand- daughter, and Heather Caswell Mauke ’81, Syl Caswell’s daughter. The College treated us beautifully. Those

who stayed on campus were housed in the student condos, with golf carts always at the ready to transport us across cam- pus. We enjoyed excellent dinners, the first at the historic Saratoga Golf and Polo Club (where everyone shared personal stories) and the grand finale dinner at the Surrey Williamson Inn, serenaded by one of Skidmore’s fine a cappella groups, the Dynamics. Among the weekend high- lights was the parade of classes, in which we wore facsimiles of our old yellow freshman bibs (thanks to the efforts of Betsy Gluck). We marched to the Arthur Zankel Music Center, a stunning new building, where we watched with great pride and loud cheers as our own Til Neri received an Outstanding Service Award. The entire class was then lauded for our record 60th-reunion attendance and our substantial reunion gift, to which 76% of the class contributed. The gift will fund a series of 1953 scholarships. After a pic- nic lunch, we convened on the lawn of Wieck ing Hall for an informal memorial ceremony, reflecting on the passing of so many of our classmates.

On a sad note, while at Reunion we learned of the passing of Susanne Eustis

Bogart on May 22. She served as class president twice and as our song leader and composer, continuing in that capac - ity at reunions. In her later years, Sue retired to the “home of her heart” in Boothbay Harbor, ME, where she was active in the community and renewed her friendship with Betty Hill Johnson. Sue’s great passion was tending to her summer cottage on the Isle of Springs, where she spent part of every summer since child- hood. Her engaging demeanor will be sorely missed. We send our deepest con- dolences to her family. Our new class president is Jan Tinsley Fiske; Jacquie Martin continues as Friends of the Presidents chair, Mary Heist and Mary Holton have signed on for another term as co-fund chairs, and Barbara Moulton has passed her pen to me, your new class secretary. Barbara has kept us well connected for many years via Scope, and I look forward to continuing her fine work. MARYANNE WADE MENK 14 DEXTER DRIVE S. BASKING RIDGE, NJ 07920-1552 MMENK@VERIZON.NET

Diane Davis Nelson and husband Jim celebrated their 11th anniver-

Maine. Kathy’s husband has an engineer- ing business in Saratoga and a home on Lake Sacandaga. The whole family was present for the nuptials, and Diane and Jim spent a week afterward on Lake George. They both still golf, are active in their church, and play a lot of bridge. Diane is a busy quilter and, like many of us, hit the big 80 this year. Sue Hamilton MacCachran celebrated

her 80th with a family party in May in Kennebunkport, ME. Nancy Passaro Whittaker retired from

her job at a local hospital four years ago but still enjoys volunteering there once a week. She loves spending time with friends and family, including 13 great- grandchildren. Ruth Miller Kwartin is planning a sum-

mer cruise on the Baltic Sea, including a meeting with Hellen Olin, who lives in Stockholm, Sweden. Hellen was at Skid - more during our junior year as an ex - change student. Ruth also spoke with Peggy Tait Willard, her junior-year roommate. Connie Swedlin Sultan sold her NYC house of more than 40 years; she says it was too much work for her and the last hurricane did her in. She forwarded a clipping from the Wall Street Journal about the cancellation of Skidmore’s men’s soc- cer season because of a hazing incident. The class will be saddened by news of

the death of Elizabeth Culver on January 13. We extend our condolences to her family. Joyce Fleming Astrup advised me that

her sister-in-law Ruth Foster Fleming passed away quietly on April 28. Ruth was a retired director of adult education in Wiscasset, ME. The class offers its sympa- thy to her family. Marion “Dutch” Rendell Seaton passed

away in 2012. This was quite a shock for me to learn, as she was my freshman roommate in Wilmarth. We send condo- lences to her family. MARDI DUGGAN DREBING 4215 CLEVELAND ROAD SYRACUSE, NY 13215-2415 MARDIFLY@AOL.COM
