the Nitrate Railways 2-8-2+2-8-2, give a glimpse of what an American Garratt might have looked like with sand domes, air com- pressors, and a Worthington BL feedwater heater. Journeys by Brian Solomon has been re- leased by John Beaufoy Publishing. Fred Matthews, Colin Nash, George Pitarys, and Scott Snell have also contributed and de- scribe 16 North American train rides, 21 in Europe, and seven in Asia, Africa, and Aus- tralia. Trains and routes in North America include the California Zephyr, the Hudson River Valley, Cumbres & Toltec and Durango & Silverton, Conway Scenic, Maine Eastern, White Pass & Yukon, and Mexico’s Copper Canyon. VIA Rail’s Canadian, Ocean, and Chaleur also made the cut, although the lat- ter had been suspended indefinitely in late 2013. In Europe the authors recommend Germany’s Rhine and Elbe River valleys, the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, Switzer- land’s Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway, the London-Paris Eurostar, England’s Settle to Carlisle Railway, and Russia’ BAM across Siberia. South Africa’s Blue Train, India’s Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Australia’s Indian Pacific, and Japan’s Shinkansen bul- let train also make the list. The writers de- scribe the stunning scenery, advanced (and ancient) technology, engineering feats, and sheer luxury of these trains and railroads. The book is beautifully printed in full color, and a simple map shows each route. This 10¹/₄″×8¹/₂″ softcover retails for $39.95 and is published by John Beaufoy Publishing, 11 Blenheim Court, 316 Woodstock Road, Ox- ford OX2 7NS, United Kingdom; order through your favorite bookseller. Oregon & Northwestern Railroad by Jeff Moore and Wayne I. Monger has been re- leased as part of the Arcadia Publishing IMAGES OF RAIL series. The authors trace the logging road’s history from its construction by the short-lived Fred Herrick Lumber Co. in 1923 to its acquisition in 1928 by the Ed- ward Hines Lumber Co., which created the common-carrier O&NW in 1929 and would own and operate it until 1983 when it was sold to Snow Mountain Pine. Rising lake wa- ters inundated the line and forced service to end in 1984; it was finally scrapped in 1988. The book also discusses Union Pacific’s Ore- gon Eastern branch, O&NW’s outside con- nection at Burns, which was acquired by Wyoming & Colorado in 1989; WYCO still operates a short segment of the line. The au- thors do a fine, concise job of outlining the history of the lumber companies, the short line, and the UP branch right up to the pres- ent, including the whereabouts of ex-O&NW equipment. There’s an excellent selection of well-printed b&w photos from all time peri- ods that show not only the railroad equip- ment but logging equipment and facilities. The book sells for $21.99 at your local book- store or from Arcadia Publishing at

Norfolk Southern’s 30th anniversary fleet of Heritage lo- comotives has been a bigger hit among railfans and rail- roaders than many might have expect- ed. This beautiful- ly-produced book, printed on fine, glossy paper with excellent photo re-
production, chronicles the heritage fleet’s first year of service “by the numbers.” The story starts with a suggestion from
Road Foreman of Engines Don Woods to NS President Wick Moorman that the railroad paint a few units in the colors of Norfolk Southern’s immediate predecessors Norfolk & Western, Southern, and Conrail to artist Andy Fletcher’s bold proposal to paint 18 lo- comotives in the colors of those roads and their components. There’s a detailed discus- sion of how Andy’s initial selections evolved into the final roster of 20-plus locomotives, with several schemes being dropped and oth- er choices added. The story behind how the actual paint colors were picked is told, along with how the locomotive builders and several railroad historical societies contributed paint diagrams and other information which added to the project’s success. After that, a two-page spread features the 2012 “Family Portrait” spectacle held at the North Carolina Trans- portation Museum before the book launches into unit-by unit coverage. Beginning with “Conrail” ES44AC No.
8098 and using an excellent selection of more than 250 roster and action images
Journey with the legendary photographer Phil Hastings as he takes us trackside in New England to witness steam’s last holdout on the old Grand Trunk main line from Portland to Montreal. From heavy passenger trains to lowly peddler freights, and the transformation to Candian National, Hastings was there to record it all. Sharp black and white photos throughout.
