They kept a steady pace but with good county roads that stayed close to the rails, we were able to get ahead for shots every couple of miles. LEFT: The local is at Charmian re- turning light to Highfield where they left all of the Union Bridge bound cars while they worked the “grit mill” at Gladhill. The GAF shingle plant was a very busy WM customer that shipped out granules for roofing shingles in covered hoppers.
Chessie people in Hagerstown were planning to run the Union Bridge local with a pair of WM F-units in the “cir- cus” paint leading. Finally, here was my chance to shoot actual WM units on the WM! It appears that the reason for this special run was Chessie’s way of thank- ing all of the local railroad clubs that had helped run the popular Chessie Steam Specials, including the Washing- ton and Potomac chapters of the NRHS, and the Chesapeake Division of the Railroad Enthusiasts.
