LEFT: The crew stands watch from the ca- boose as the Union Bridge local shoves up the hill towards the Lehigh Cement plant on De- cember 16, 1978. For switching at the plant, the crew chose to leave the F units behind and work with just the Geep. This street running operation down Farquhar Street was relocated in 2007. BELOW: The local crew returns light to Highfield where the freight for Union Bridge had been left while they switched the GAF “grit mill” near Gladhill.

and we got many photos along the way. Union Bridge is located roughly halfway between Hagerstown and Bal- timore, and is home to a large Lehigh Portland Cement plant. At one point the crew cut off the F-units and backed the train up the street-running branch on South Farquhar Street to access the cement plant. This left the F’s all by themselves for an hour or two, so Mark Caplan ran off to a local hardware store to procure some black paint and brush- es to touch up the WM logo and striping on the nose! It was hoped that the 7173 would be leading for the westbound re- turn trip, so that engine got the most attention from our motley bunch. Un- fortunately, when the crew returned and reassembled the train, the F’s were not in the lead.

The westbound chase produced more photo opportunities, including a second trip down the Dutch Line to the shingle
