The Swissdriver: railroad trips in Switzerland

Y our tour guide for

I organize and guide tours to the great railroad lines of Switzerland. Enjoy the famous Gotthard Railroad (SBB) or the scenic Furka Steam Railroad (DFB)! But I also show you the unknown railroads, like the beau- tiful Jura Railroad (CJ) or the narrow gauged Walden- burg Railroad (WB). Whatever you would like to discover, I take care to make it happen. I ride with you in the trains and inform you about the historical, technical and cultural aspects of the area. I drive you to the best photo spots along the track by car. I take care of tickets, food, lodging and souvenirs.

picture windows. “Why?” you ask? First, for the commanding view — which extends more than 20 miles “as the crow flies” — of what is the “Mon” River’s sharpest horse- shoe bend on its route north to Pittsburgh (a spacious outdoor seating area, below the windows, is also available, weather permit- ting). Second — or is it first? — Newell, di- rectly across the river, is where a CSXT yard holds coal trains going into and out of the former MGA district. These, and the signals that control them, are clearly visible from your seat. To augment your experience, di- rectly beneath your location — it is, after all, on a perch —the Norfolk Southern Mon line runs on your side of the river. NS coal train traffic runs along the river into and out of the former MGA district as well. In the 60- to 90-minutes you’ll take to enjoy a meal, as many as four to six trains may move through your field of vision. About That Meal: A diverse menu offers specialty soups, salads, 22 sandwiches, six dinner entrees, 14 sides and/or appetizers, and three or four desserts. The food is per- fect for both train watching and the “lounge” half of the name. The “must have” menu items include a mildly-spicy “Bob’s Home- made Chili,” created by co-owner Bob Sepesy. He simmers ground beef, kidney beans, chopped tomatoes and onions, and shredded cheddar to a perfection that might not be spicy enough for Texans. The Home- made Sausage Special sandwich comes in two sizes — small (on a burger bun) and large (on a hoagie roll). Unless you have your doctor’s permission to do otherwise, go small. The ground sausage is made from a Sepesy-family recipe, and is topped with a zesty tomato sauce, slices of pepperoni, melt- ed provolone, fried onions and mushrooms. I recommend the fries and cole slaw to accom- pany. The reason to go “small?” Room for dessert: specialty ice creams, home-made peanut butter pie on cookie dough crust with hot fudge drizzled over, and... (sorry, I quit listening after peanut butter pie). For the Record: High Point Restaurant & Lounge is at 882 High Point Drive in Coal Center.
