Pere Marquette No. 1225 Returns to Service
PULLING THE NORTH POLE EXPRESS WITHOUT A JACKET, Pere Marquette Berkshire No. 1225 headed west past the grain eleva- tor in Carland Mich., on December 1, 2013, en route from Owosso to Ashley. The 1941 Lima had been out of service since 2009, and the
Amtrak
HIGH SPEED SPECS SLOWED DOWN: In a 2013 announcement, Amtrak and the Cali- fornia High Speed Rail Authority said they’d issue a joint specification for new high speed trainsets capable of running at 220 m.p.h. But when the specification was issued in Novem- ber, the top speed for Amtrak’s trains had been reduced to 160 m.p.h. — just ten m.p.h. over the Acela’s top speed and equal to that of 1967’s Metroliner m.u. cars. What happened? Apparently Amtrak realized that in the short term, the Northeast Corridor cannot support operations over 160 m.p.h., while the Califor- nia high speed system, being newly built to support operations at 220 m.p.h., will.
Canadian National
NO AGAWA SNOW TRAINS THIS YEAR: Canadian National says it will not run winter- season Agawa Canyon Snow Trains out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on the former Algo- ma Central Railway this year due to rising costs and stagnant ridership. The trains had operated about six times each season. The railway says it will continue to operate its popular summertime and autumn trains, which run daily in the tourist season and are considered economically viable. Those trains have enjoyed increasing ridership since CN re-equipped them with former CN Tempo Train equipment purchased from the Col- orado Ski Train several years ago.
completion of its FRA-mandated 1472 service day inspection and over- haul was celebrated with its first fire-up on October 20, 2013. The loco- motive was scheduled to pull 16 North Pole Expresses in the 2013 sea- son. Visit

Bridge Conditions Threaten Ontario Short Line
TRILLIUM RAILWAY CO. SAID IN LATE 2013 that it planned to abandon its 33-mile St. Thomas & Eastern Railway in Ontario on December 20 due to the condition of a large bridge in Tillsonburg. The line served at least nine customers in Courtland, Delhi, Aylmer (above), and Tillsonburg. While on-line communities scramble to find federal money to keep the line running, Trillium will continue to operate the Port Colbourne Harbor Railway in southeastern Ontario. If the railroad folds, some customers could be serviced by the Ontario Southland out of Tillsonburg.
