LED solutions for global leader The new offices for Imagination

Technologies required an intelligent lighting scheme that would contribute to the eco-credentials of the modern building as well as deliver high levels of illuminance. As such, MITIE Engineering appointed TRILUX to design an effective solution that would achieve the necessary balance between performance and aesthetics. Located in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire Imagination House is the new UK head office for Imagination Technologies, a global leader in multimedia and communication technologies. The three-storey building will house over 1,000 members of staff. Imagination House has a strong environmental focus, designed to achieve a rating of excellent under the BREEAM system of sustainable buildings. Therefore, the lighting scheme by TRILUX had to utilise the latest energy efficient innovations. Recessed Liventy luminaires, 600mm x 600mm, utilising 14W T5 fluorescent lamps have been installed throughout the open plan offices, providing a lifetime of 24k hours. Also, featuring an optical PMMA diffuser with a structured surface, it offers decorative ceiling illumination and increases light comfort.

Within the 2 interconnecting boardrooms, 3 conference rooms and open plan Café area Belviso semi-recessed luminaires, 600mm x 600mm, utilising the latest LEDs have been installed. The LED fixtures will provide an estimated energy saving of over 7500kWh and an excellent extended lifetime of over 50k hours. Designed to create a completely harmonious, neutral white light effect, Belviso creates a pleasant environment for meeting rooms and work stations. Initially the company was skeptical about including such a vast amount of LEDs within its lighting scheme. However, the experienced teams at TRILUX and MITIE Engineering put forward excellent designs and calculations, which clearly demonstrated that utilising LEDs would help us to achieve the balance of performance and aesthetics. Although contributing to the eco- credentials of the building was a high priority, TRILUX had to ensure the lighting scheme enhanced the contemporary interior design of the offices as well as the modern corporate identity of Imagination Technologies. All lighting solutions were selected to create high levels of illuminance and feature sleek,

silver grey and aluminimum designs. Phase One, which included the offices areas of Imagination House is now complete and the company is very pleased with the results so far. As it moves into Phase Two and Three, it expects to have TRILUX LED solutions installed throughout reception space, public areas, corridors, cafeterias as well as sales rooms providing a combination of general and accent lighting. www.trilux.com

Intelligent LED gear trays cut the cost of car park lighting by 70%

As energy costs continue to rise, local authorities and facilities managers everywhere are seeking savings across all their assets. All-night lighting across car parks that are not in constant use can seem inefficient and unnecessary. But leaving areas in total darkness would present unacceptable hazards to the public. In the face of this challenge, Medway Council has been working with Earlsmann Lighting and energy consultant, Ashley Baxter, from Hydrostat, to develop a new car park lighting solution that balances the need for safety and security with impressive energy savings.

Safety versus savings – the challenge The Council needed to replace the existing fluorescent lighting at the Brook public car park. A simple swap to LED tubes would have achieved a reduction in energy use of around 60%. The addition of sensors would result in further savings, but simple on/off movement sensors would leave areas of the car park in total darkness when lighting was deactivated – creating safety issues for users.

Designing a balanced solution After consulting Earlsmann Lighting, the Council decided on a solution that balanced the need for safety with significant savings. The new lighting incorporates an automatic pre-set lighting level of 10%, with levels restored to full brightness when triggered by movement sensors.

Building & Facilities Management – October 2013

To achieve this effective variant solution, the Earlsmann team designed a replacement LED gear tray. This avoided the need to remove ballasts and install LED emergency packs, enabling a much quicker installation process. Using external drivers and mounting the LEDs directly to the gear tray also improves the cooling capability of the equipment, increasing its reliability and cutting maintenance costs.

Faster payback, greater ongoing savings The project is currently being installed by the contractor NCS Technology. The graph shows the significant impact the LED lighting has already had on energy usage – with costs reduced by over 70% compared to the old fluorescent lighting. Although the addition of sensors meant initial investment costs were higher compared to simply replacing tubes, the combination of these intelligent sensors and the 10% preset level will deliver faster payback and provide greater ongoing savings to the Council. Ashley Baxter, from Hydrostat, was impressed by the team at Earlsmann. “They are very knowledgeable with regards to LED - they have been with us every step of the way through system design, providing advice and support and assistance during commissioning,” said Ashley, also confirming that the gear tray and control system is “performing exactly as required”.

LED lighting – the intelligent choice With the option to add sensors and pre-

set lighting levels to suit user requirements, LED lighting is the intelligent solution for almost any application – from car parks to stations, factories, retail premises, offices, hotels, hospitals and schools. Making the switch to LEDs has never been easier, and provides instant, measurable benefits in lower maintenance costs, reduced power consumption and improved lighting levels. Earlsmann manufactures its LED gear tray units in the UK, providing high- quality, reliable products underpinned by a full warranty. The company provides a comprehensive range of lighting solutions for every interior and exterior application.
