Cimatron integrates Moldex 3D cooling


CADCAM software specialist Cimatron has agreed a deal with CoreTech Systems, developer of the Moldex 3D moulding simulation software, to integrate cooling simulation tools supporting 3D printed conformal elements within its CimatronE product. The introduction of laser


sintering technology means that mould cores and inserts can be easily produced with cooling channels close to and conforming with the core/ cavity surface using 3D printing methods. The new integration is said


to provide CimatronE users with a convenient tool to


evaluate the benefit and return-on-investment (ROI) of using this conformal cooling approach. The cooling analysis tool will be delivered as an optional add-on in Moldex3D eXplorer for Cimatron. It will enable users to perform mould filling analysis and to optimise cooling channel layout. As well as conformal cooling, the software will also model conventional channels, baffles and bubbles. to accurately identify hot or cold spots, mould tempera- tures, required cooling time, and cooling efficiency of a mould before cutting or ‘printing’ steel. “The new cooling analysis

❙ Germany’s Steinbichler Optotechnik’s Comet 6 16M is a new high end sensor for 3D digitalisation of delicate surfaces. The device uses a 16MP high resolution sensor system that provides a short working distance even when large measuring fields are being used. ❙ China-based Star Protoytpe turned around production of a prototype housing and movement mechanism for US-based Satarii’s Swivl camera tracking platform for the Apple iPhone in just 11 days. Swivl is intended to work as a personal camera platform, allowing the smartphone to be smoothly panned and tilted. German precision injection moulding company Toolcraft, which specialises in production of hearing aid components, has installed a €1.5m automated machining centre to speed up its mould making process. The fully air conditioned installation includes


Exeron 5-axis and 3-axis machining centres, four Exeron EDM machines (two with Erowa ERM robots), two Zeiss Contura 3D coordinate measuring machines, and an automated pallet

system. The automated set-up is intended for round-the-clock production. Toolcraft operates 20 injection moulding machines producing components ranging from 0.01-5.00g. Tolerances are demanding in the hearing aid sector, with clearances typically in the 10-20 micron range, so the company uses technologies such as conformal cooling to minimise distortion. ❙ www.toolcraft.de

The new add-in tool allows Solidworks CAD users to link parts and assembly file details to create engineering change orders and to cross-populate inventories, bills of material and project management modules.
