described as sanding the skin and is often used by many beauticians and some clinics. It can make the texture of the skin smoother but again this has very little effect on actual lines and wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin type A The use of Botulinum toxin injections leads to a paralysis of the underlying muscle and is one of the most popular treatments of dynamic lines, including frown lines on the forehead, horizontal lines on the forehead, and fine lines around the eyes known as crow's feet. Its licence in the UK is for vertical lines at the glabella. It is generally quite safe but does require appropriate application. Rarely, one can get a partial droop of an eyelid or a heaviness of the brow associated with the injection. It is important that the practitioner understands facial anatomy to understand the balance between the elevator and depressor muscles of the face.

Dermal fillers For deeper lines dermal fillers can be very effective. The most popular fillers being used at present consist of cross-linked hyaluronic acid. The advantages of dermal fillers include little downtime following treatment and an almost instant improvement can be achieved. However, fillers also need to be used appropriately. The application of a filler placed in an inappropriate place can lead to an uneven texture. Rarely, one can get adverse effects such as foreign body granuloma formation, which can feel like nodules under the skin or obstruction of a blood vessel leading to necrosis and residual scarring. It is important that practitioners are aware of how to deal with the complications if they were to arise. From a patient's perspective, dermal fillers can seem relatively non-invasive but they are temporary and will be broken down leading to the need for repeated treatments.

Laser treatment Laser resurfacing using carbon dioxide or Er:YAG lasers led to a significant advance
