Key points

■ Very few published studies exist comparing the side-effect profile, advantages and disadvantages between microcannulae and hypodermic needles with dermal filler treatments

■ Pain and discomfort experienced by the patient is not only dependent on their own pain tolerance, but will also be dependent on the injection technique

■ Patient satisfaction of treatment results will tend to be the same as when using hypodermic needles

■ Erythema and swelling are typical side-effects that will not affect social events following the use of the microcannula

■ Bruising at the site of the entry point may be visible in a small number of patients treated with a microcannula
