ONTHETEE - PAUL CASEY Home Sengs
Do you feel that you can climb the rankings again? That is the plan, yes. I feel like I am playing
well, like I am hitting the ball well and hopefully I am coming back into a bit of form for the rest of the year.
How do you feel retailers cater for golfers as a whole? I think in terms of retail, the golfing world
has always got it exactly right. It’s fantastic when you walk into a golf store and you have knowledgeable staff who can answer any query. That’s no mean feat because the range of equipment and accessories is greater now than at any time in the past, but to see the levels of expertise is really reassuring. I think to know golf equipment is to really know golf itself, and that’s why most retailers are respected and trusted, because they know the sport and care about it.
Do you feel there is much of a difference between the larger retailers and the smaller, independent ones? I think the large golf chains get criticism
because they are appealing to the mass market, and very often it’s the golf shops at private clubs that provide that bit extra, but I don’t think there’s too much in it. At the end of the day, everyone in golf wants to open up the sport to the widest possible market – we want to get new people involved and we want to develop the Ryder Cup winners of the future. The more we can welcome in new players by putting the sport on the high street, and by opening up golf at prices that are accessible, then we’re doing something right.
What is the key to giving customers good service? For the retailers themselves, it comes back
to knowledge. The more they can impart expertise, the more people will trust them, and the more likely those golfers are to come back for more. I don’t think there’s anything in that that people didn’t already know, but it’s so true.
What irons are you using at the moment? Nike VR Pro Combo Irons & Nike VR S
Forged Irons. That is mainly because of the 2 iron, which I love to use when I don’t fancy using a 5 wood. Nike have worked really hard to develop clubs that really respond to what is being asked of them. You feel the equipment can get you to where you want to be. The only thing you then need is for your body and mind to do the same!

What about your woods? Nike again, the VR S Tour. I can change my 3
wood ranges by four degrees which really helps, as I like to have my fairway woods more open than other players. Using the 3 wood I can get it 280-300 yards, which is brilliant.
Is it true that you bend your wedges for a bit more control? That is true. It would be a couple of degrees
here and there, like bending my 54 degrees to 52, and my 60 to 59. I find it does give more control, and a bit of a lower trajectory.
