AFI Opens New Training Centre

Following a substantial investment, AFI has opened a new training venue near Birmingham. The Midlands Training Centre offers IPAF and PASMA working at height courses, and will provide skills and safety training from early October.

The new centre, at Brickhouse Lane,

West Bromwich, is just minutes from the M6 motorway and can provide training for up to 70 delegates at any one time. The centre comprises extensive indoor and outdoor practical training areas and four training rooms.

AFI Chief Operating Officer David McNicholas said that AFI decided to launch the new Midlands Training Centre as a result of the success of the group’s UTN Training Centre in Wakefield. “Our Wakefield open course centre has been the blueprint for this new centre and for our other open course centres at London East and Liverpool. We have a large and very loyal customer base in the Midlands and we want to ensure that they receive the very best training facilities and services. Our substantial investment in this new centre will mean that it will become a centre of training excellence for AFI.”

£2.3m project for student accommodation revamp

Mountjoy has won a £2.3m contract to smarten up student accommodation Harry Law Hall at the University of Portsmouth in a three-stage refurbishment set for completion in August 2015.

Harry Law Hall is a five-storey student accommodation block. The £2.3m contract will involve painting and decorating, replacing light fittings and carpet tiles, replacing internal doors, sanitary fittings, kitchen units as well as electrical appliances. The scope of works also includes the demolition of internal masonry walls.

The three-phase contract encompasses all five floors, overhauling the existing rooms to better suits the needs of today’s students.

The first phase of the three-stage overhaul began in July with work commencing on the fourth floor, where 27 ensuite rooms were refurbished and three kitchens replaced. Work then began on the third floor, where Mountjoy revamped 59 ensuite rooms and replaced13 kitchens. The first phase of the project was completed in August prior to the start of the new academic year.

The second phase of the £2.3m revamp commences next summer, with the refurbishment of the second floor and part of the first floor. The building and maintenance services provider is scheduled to complete the renovation of the ground floor and the remainder of the first floor during summer 2015. www.mountjoy.co.uk
