Best of Bristol as Fulton supplies new boiler package


When Imperial Tobacco was looking for a cost-effective solution to supply heating and hot water for its headquarters in Bristol, the project became a distinctly local affair for Fulton, a leading British manufacturer of steam, hot water and thermal fluid solutions.


As factory maintenance engineer Gary Withey explains: “The new skid-mounted steam boiler package was specified by our Bristol-based consulting engineers Hoarlea, built in Bristol by Fulton and installed by Spie Matthew Hall, also based in Bristol.” Commenting on the new installation


Gary says that although the old boiler house has been decommissioned and the factory demolished, the original offices remain and still feature the original steam coils and site services. It was therefore decided that a replacement steam boiler package was the cheapest solution for supplying domestic hot water and heating, rather than opting for a new hot water boiler, which would have required a completely new HVAC system for the offices.


The Fulton gas-fired, skid-mounted system contains two 60J boilers – to ensure duty backup for planned/unplanned maintenance procedures – and features all the necessary ancillaries to integrate with Imperial Tobacco’s HVAC services. also provide the backup they required, and decided that, being a nationally and internationally respected boiler manufacturer, Fulton was the obvious choice.”


He adds that, “thanks to Fulton’s knowledge of steam systems and because the new skid-mounted boiler system was connecting to existing site services, downtime during the switch was kept to a minimum.”

Mitsubishi Electric looks to the clouds to offer advanced control


Mitsubishi Electric has launched an innovative Wi-Fi interface which will deliver ‘cloud-based’ control systems to both installers and end-users of air conditioning, with the real possibility of being able to monitor and control air conditioning units remotely via the Internet.


The company has reacted to the potential that the latest developments in cloud-based computing offers, which enables everyone from individual users to companies with vast, nationwide estates to monitor system use, spot potential faults and change schedules, loads and temperature settings. The development of a Wi-Fi interface for its air conditioning and heat pump products has been coupled with a new dedicated service called MELCloud, to offer advanced energy-saving features and controls with easy apps for either computer, tablet or mobile

device, which will allow for basic control and monitoring. “We’ve just launched the air conditioning Wi-Fi interface for our split systems and will be adding others for our air-to-water heat pumps and VRF systems,” explains Sebastien Desmottes, air conditioning Product Marketing Manager. “The interface simply needs to be installed near to the air conditioner or heat pump and builds a wireless connection between the unit and the building’s Internet connection.”
